I actually subscribe to the theory that Nefertiti was
the new name for Queen Tiye.
I mean, the Egyptians were known for picking new
names and pretending that made a different person.
Kind of did, actually.
I mean, you're at work, it's a very large corporation,
everyone is miserable and then one day it's announced
that the CEO, whom no one you ever met got within 100
feet of -- none of you ever saw him -- anyway, this CEO
is gone, and a new one with a totally different name just
took over...
Even if it was the same guy, for all intents and purposes,
FOR YOU, there would be a new CEO... as far as you and
everyone else were concerned, you all had a new boss.
The Egyptians took this one further. In a sense, the name
really was you. And a king had many of them. And sometimes
took new ones, to signal some change or mark an
occasion...
Tutankaten became Tutankamun, for instance...
Hetshepsut took on the name Maatkare on the thrown...
Now bear with me here...
Queen Tiye was very much a power within her husbands
reign. We have correspondences, letters written from
foreigners to her. She was "The power behind the thrown."
And because she was part of that power structure, because
she was a force, that meant all the officials within a position
of power (wealth, great social standing) were tied to Queen
Tiye.
Right?
New leadership... "New broom sweeps clean."
So EVERYONE would have wanted to maintain the queen
within a position of power. It meant stability. It meant
everyone kept their job. It meant no surprises. And there
were no limits placed on the royals. Her son could take
her as a wife, they would have needed to change her name.
And that's something Egyptians did.
Oh, there's a very compelling argument in support of Tiye
being Nefertiti. This is just touching on it.
