What exactly does shot peening a set of rods consisist of? Does this make them
stronger? How so? I'm considering adding a conservative nitros boost (125
horse)
to my 440 in the future, and was told the stock 440 rods are weak. I called
Muscle Motors and the guy said they don't actually shot peen them but do
something called shot blasting? Similiar to sand blasting I think. Is anyone
familiar with this
alternate ( less expensive? ) proceedure called shot blasting? How would
something like this actually make a rod stronger? How much should I expect to
pay for a quality magnaflux, shot peen, striaghtness check ARP bolts installed,
resized, etc.? Any recommendations on where I should get this done (reasonable
and quality work ) Has anyone ever ran a similair nitros boost( 125 horse kit)
and had a problem with stock 440 rods? Thanks in advance,
Paul

Shot peening is cold working of a metal surface by metal shot impingement. Shot
blasting is sand blasting with metal shot (small metal balls, usually steel or cast
iron) rather than sand (or other similar media) and is primarily performed to
aggressively clean parts. Shot peening has little effect on overall strength but
it can greatly improve fatigue strength. In other words, the shot peened
connecting rod will last longer under the same conditions.

Shot peening work hardens the surface of the metal, which creates a residual
compressive stress, that helps to prevent or slow crack development. Properly set
up, the shot blasting process will create the same residual compressive stress.

shot peening actually hits the piece and makes the metal tighter and condences
the metal. like squeazing the metal and makes it stronger

It is basically using force and using very small round either glass, ceramic or metal balls to hit against the part. It is used to remove rust, die cast remnants or smooth out ruff finishes. If you have more questions I would suggest calling someone who does it like these guys. I am sure they would be happy to explain how it works and what you can use it all for.
