Basal ganglia and its calcification...

What is the basal ganglia? (use of, purpose of, benefit to the quality
of life, etc.) What happens when the left globus pallidus, which I
gather is a part of the basal ganglia, begins calcificating? Any and all
information is appreciated!

The basal ganglia assist with motor output. Dysfunctional basal ganglia
might produce symptoms of tremor or rigidity, as in Parkinsonian
patients. Calcification of the globus pallidus may be seen in a rare
familial (where it is associated with cerebellar disease) or lupus, for
example. Such calcification MAY not produce symptoms.
How old is the patient, what are the symptoms, and what is the family
history?
