If Minoxidil causes anxiety/bad skin & eyes how do you reverse it?

Hi guys (and gals?)

Okay, first up I don't want to start a debate here about *IF* Minoxidil
causes the following -- if you want to debate *IF* it does please take your
message to one of the other related threads. This thread is about what to
do to reverse the following, if you have already decided Minox *DOES* cause:

1. Anxiety (adrenal)
2. Bad skin (ageing, deep pores, acne)
3. Dark circles under eyes
4. Puffiness under eyes
5. Bloodshot whites of eyes
6. High blood pressure

Click here for some related threads with many other people who experience
these:

Now of course not everyone taking Minoxidil 2%/5% will get these symptoms,
and not everyone with these symptoms will be using Minoxidil, BUT there does
appear to be a correlation and overlap that far is higher than just
'coincidence'. This is mainly because most of these people's symptoms came
almost immediately after starting Minox, when they had never had the
symptoms before that, and have no other reason for the symptoms.

For myself, I never had anxiety, had clear under-eyes, white whites of my
eyes, etc. I started Minoxidil 8 years ago on 2% and slowly went up to 5%.
I can't define exactly when my anxiety, redness under my eyes, puffiness and
bloodshot whites started, but I can tell you it was gradual and definitely
after beginning Minox.

I came off Minoxidil for about 3 months recently as a test, but the anxiety
didn't seem to subside. Has Minox done something permanent?

The redness and puffiness seemed a bit better but was still there after 3
months. To test this, I resumed Minox, and the redness and puffiness
because noticeably worse. I mean noticeably.

SO THE BIG QUESTION IS: How does one reverse these alleged effects of
Minoxidil, apart from coming off it?

My doctor had put me on Beta Blockers (Half-Inderal) to combat the anxiety
and high blood pressure and sent me to a psychologist for 12 weeks. I'm
only 29! When I think this could all be because of Minoxidil, it makes me
so angry. I had a happy childhood, have had no traumatic events, and no
real reason to develop anxiety. No. 1 suspect does appear to be Minox.

Can anyone help with a reversal programme?

I note even Minoxidil's manufacturers admit it causes 5 of the 6
side-effects I listed above [my comments in brackets]:

"Side Effects: Dermatologic: ... dry skin, erythema [AKA redness of the
skin] ... Allergic: Hives [e.g. acne], facial swelling [e.g. puffiness under
eyes/cheekbones] ... CNS: Dizziness, lightheadedness [e.g. when standing],
faintness, anxiety [adrenal], fatigue. Miscellaneous: Conjunctivitis [AKA
bloodshot eyes]..."

This message is for the sceptics out there who say it doesn't cause these
things. Pharmacia & Upjohn admit it! Fact. What I want to do is find out
how to deal with it and reverse it. Sadly we can't start a multiple law
suit because they warn it may cause these things in their leaflet, so we
were stupid to take it in the first place right? Grr.

A law suit? I've been using minoxidil for 14 years and have none of the
side-effects you mention. For me minoxidil is great.

As I said, "of course not everyone taking Minoxidil 2%/5% will get these
symptoms". That's the case with any drug side-effect, duh!

Hi Marcel

Sorry to hear this. There's a lot of us out there.

As I said I went off it for over 3 months and I didn't get much better. The
only improvement was my under-eyes which were slightly less red.

Do you get puffiness at the top of your cheekbones too? This is another
side-effect I get. The Minox leaflet does admit it causes facial
swelling/puffiness.

How long have you had the symptoms and how long on Minox?
Did they start after Minox?
What have you done to combat them?
Describe your anxiety and how it affects you?
What has your doctor blamed it on?

Keep in touch.

While I am not going to argue that this doesn't happen, I will argue
that it doesn't happen in nearly as many people as you are
insinuating. First off, There's a million POSSIBLE side effects listed
on any drug. It's what users experience when they do the study,
there's no 100% proof it's not coincidental either. If 1% of people
had puffiness on their face that would be reported. 1% doesnt mean
everyone. It's like the nizoral study that 1% lost hair. So what - the
other 99% grew it. Sometimes there's no cause and effect. You know
what you can eat a fruit and get an allergic reaction and get hives.
Does that mean fruit gives you hives?

I'm sure these symptoms can definitely occur from minoxidil but let's
not start blaming the sun on them like we did propecia. Be HAPPY WE
HAVE THIS TO TAKE. Our dad's had nothing but polysorbate.

Yep, I got the puffy eyes really bad. Just to make sure it was
Minoxidil, I stopped it and restarted it. Yep, the eyes went puffy
again.

Hi Rob

How long were you on Minox before you came off it?

How long after coming off it did the puffiness subside?

I was on Minox for about 8 years so for me the redness never completely went
and I still have the bloodshot eyes and anxiety, after 3 months off it.

I think there is some correlation between the time on Minox, and the time
taken for symptoms to subside. Anxiety isn't like a rash, it won't just go
when the antagonist goes. I wish I knew how to cure anxiety caused by
medicine rather than caused by stress!

OK,

I've been through all this and I think I was one of the main guys to
post on this.

I took 2% for a year, grew hair on my scalp, but also all over my
body.

I got black rings under my eyes, lost definition in my face
(swelling/puffiness), looked and felt tired/depressed, horrible skin
(big pores, old looking, etc), however no real anxiety.

I got off the stuff and it seemed to fade away after 3 months but you
gotta go and exercise .. run.. do the exact opposite of what it did to
your body and things will change.. Try taking megadoses of pantothenic
acid to get your adrenal function up again.. Use some skin products to
soften up the skin and shrink the pores.. and take any detoxifiers
that you can, they do actually help.

Give this a try and i'm sure your symptoms will get better, but stay
off the minox.

And whoever said that they'd rather have hair with all these side
effects, then rather be bald and normal has no idea what they are
talking about. When you get these side effects it's a nightmare.. you
look and feel like absolute shit, and I think I'd rather be bald.

Thanks richlocks, I totally agree with every word you said.

But rather than go bald I'm going to try a combo like Proxiphen-N to replace
the Minox, Nizoral and (maybe topical) Fina/dutasteride. Have you tried any
replacements for the Minox?

I guess we're some of the unlucky % that have bad side effects to Minox.

Another 2 questions:

1) If my adrenals are already over-reacting, would taking "megadoses of
pantothenic acid to get your adrenal function up again" as you suggest be
wise? It is already "up".

2) Did you try any double-tests to see whether just doing the exercise,
detoxifiers, skin products helped. Maybe it wasn't Minox causing these
side-effects, but rather natural ageing and lack of exercise? I'm just
playing Devil's advocate here, I don't actually believe that - but it'd be
nice to completely rule it out and be 100% sure it's Minox before we all
come off it.

Thank in advance richlocks

Sure did.. took 2%, had all that crap happen to me, went off of it and
recovered about 75% with a summer full of good diet and exercise..
Cleaned out my body. Mind you, I never went back to normal.. I am
starting to get close however these days with skin products and
detoxifiers.

Then about 2 years later my doctor convinced me it was all in my head
and I went back on it.. 5% this time.. same shit happened.

Ah sorry about that.

OK, As to get the skin good real quick get some sort of pore
refiner/exfoliator.. I can't name any in specific cuz i haven't given
any of those a shot really (except a facial masque once in a while).

1) Pantotehnic acids, take megaloads for a few months and watch what
happens to your skin.. start at 1gram a day, go up to about 5grams.

2) Kombucha Tea, really did help in making the skin smooth, pores
small.

3) Retin-A micro 3-4 nights a week, Will tighten up the skin nicely.

4) Anything that will help flush the crap out of your body, do it.
Make sure it isn't some scam BS tho.. Things like Kombucha Tea,
Wheatgrass, etc should help.. You can fast for a day or two with only
drinking water and see some more results..

This is all I can think of now.. and it's probably all I did.. my skin
is not 100% again, but close. Altho, since i've taken up finasteride
for a second bout, the skin seems to be looking a bit worse (rings
under the eyes, bloatedness, unevenness). I don't know I will resolve
that.

Forgot a really cheap thing that makes the skin look amazing.. its
called NaPCA.. it comes in a solution by twin labs.. real cheap, like
2 bucks. Spray this stuff on your face throughout the day (works best
after shower) and watch your pores just dissapear.. Someone on this NG
suggested to me and i'm thankful for that, it works great.

Great stuff, thanks. What you say about Finas giving you rings under the
eyes concerns me.

A) I've come off Minox and am considering Finas as a replacement. But I
don't want to replace one dark-ring causer for another!

B) Redness & puffiness are listed as Minox side-effects, but are not listed
as Finas side-effects. In other words, I would expect Minox to cause them,
but not Finas. So, how can you be sure it is the Finas doing it this time
round? And why would it -- it works in a completely different way to Minox
so the same side-effects are very unlikely.

Thanks.

Funny enough, they are causing me similar side effects..

But a different type.. Yes my face was bloated on both drugs.. but the
minox bloating was water retention.. while on finasteride it's due to
hormones.. It's more like swelling.. It's hard to explain.

And yea.. I look tired alot.. I dunno what the deal is.. maybe I
should get off the drug, but for now I have nothing else.

Worse comes to worse i'm thinking of jumping on to spooky's regimen..
He's making some incredible progress.

Hi everyone. I've been on oral minoxidil and finasteride for 4 months. I have developed fluid retention under my eyes, and eye bags. Seems like I have the same problem as all of you. I've been off for a week now and no change. From what I gather it takes a few months?
