If you are like me, you may be a little frustrated with the inaccurate
and out dated information in the repeater directories. I decided to do
something about it. Following the philosophy of Wikipedia, I decided to
create a user maintained data base of repeaters. The site isn't 100%
finished but is very functional. The URL is http://hrrdb.com short for
HamRadioRepeaterDatabase.com. Please take a few minutes to go to the
site, register and start adding repeaters to the database. Because this
is a user maintained database, there are currently only a few repeaters
in the database, so please add the repeaters you know about.

Some I have talked to about this site have expressed concerns that
people with less than honorable intentions, could make for a lot of
errors in the database. I have a few features to help avoid this
situation. Not all of them are implemented yet as there needs to be an
established user base before they will all work well. The first feature
is "Repeater Verification". If you are a registered user, while viewing
the details of a repeater there will be a "Verify" button at the bottom
of the screen. If you can confirm the information is correct, click on
the verify button. This will increase the verification count for that
repeater. Then when viewing repeaters you can see how many users have
verified it. The second feature is "User Rankings". The site keeps
track of how many entries a user has added or edited and how many other
users have verified their entries/edits. That way if you see a user
with a ranking of 0 you will know there is a chance the data isn't good.
Until the site gets going, all users will have a low ranking. Each
user can only verify an entry once. One of the rules I will implement
later, is if a new user with a low ranking wants to edit a record that
has been posted by a user with a high ranking and verified by other
users with a high ranking, the web site will not allow them to change
that record till their ranking improves. There are more but I will stop
here.

Please take a few minutes to checkout the site and add a few repeaters
to the database.

I look forward to any input on the site and suggestions for making it
better. The only way this site will be useful is if people register and
actively add data and verify existing data. Only time will tell if this
idea of a user maintained database of repeaters will work well.

do a search from any city or lat long in the lower 48 and use a distance
of 5,000 miles or so.

There is a search form on the site ... the link is in the left menu.
Once there it asks for the city you are in or the latitude and longitude
of your location. It also asks how far out do you want it to search for
repeaters. So if you enter 5000 miles from pretty much any city in the
USA you will get all the repeaters in the database. as of now most of
them are in the Oklahoma City area. Three in Oregon and one in
Kentucky. Register and you can add the repeaters you know about to the
database.

That is because the site has only been up for a few days and all the
repeaters in it are added by the users. Read the original post and it
will be more clear how the site works.

I added a repeater and I think I'll probably add others. This could work.

The only need I can see is a mechanism to scrub repeaters that eventually go
off the air because the owner dies or moves. If it's mentioned, I missed
it.

I think it will if you and others put in the effort to add a few
repeaters as you find out about them and then tell others about the site
so they can add some too.

There is a status drop down list, on of the status items is "down
permanently" After some time having the status set to that I will
probably delete the repeater from the database or at very least make it
not show up in any search.

If you read my original post I talk about a few features that will help
with that, I also plan to add more. If anyone has any suggestions on
other ways to help protect against that, please let me know. One other
feature I didn't mention was I plan on having the option to email the
person who last edited a record and the person who created it when
someone edits a record. So they have a heads up and if it is a bogus
edit, they can contact me and I can do something about it.

I do plan on removing any user who does not have a valid call sign.
That will be done at some time increment as I download the latest FCC
database from time to time.

I have also suggested to a few of the coordinators, that are good at
staying on top of their job, about implementing a feature that will set
it up so that only certain people can edit records for they add to the
site which will help in areas that have good coordinators.
