Larsen 5/8 wave mobile antenna ??

In various user groups over the last few years, I have had many hams state
that for the best gain, one of the best 2 meter antennas is the Larsen 5/8
wave antenna. Again, I have seen this repeated over and over.

I have gone to the Larsen website, and have searched ALL of my ham
catalogs, but NONE of them show a 5/8 wave antenna.

Was this a myth, or did Larsen just stop making them ??

Thanks !!

Hi Jim,

They're still in business: http://www.larsen-antennas.com/. I used to have
a job and installed their products, and have one mounted on one of my cars.
I chose the LM150 over the NMO and NLA series. That's because I'd seen more
than a few matching inductors for the latter two (especially the NMO)
break... mostly the threaded insert pulling out, and cracks in the plastic
outer cover. We started pushing products from Max Rad
(http://www.maxrad.com/). I never saw one of those fail. I don't know if
Larsen has since addressed their issues.

I have a Larson two meter 5/8 wave NLA mount that I purchased about 40 years
ago. It has been mounted on many different vehicles that I have owned over
the last forty years. The design of the matching coil is excellent. The coil
is low loss due to the size and materials of the conductor. The coil is
constructed as a low pass filter, which eliminates most of the interference
from high level UHF signals that are found in large cities. The
encapsulation of the coil has never cracked or failed. This is the best
working two meter mobile antenna I have ever owned.

I currently own a Workman NMO two meter mobile antenna, but it does not work
as well as my old Larsen. Larsen (the man) has been gone for sometime, and
the antenna business was sold to Radiall. I do not know anything about their
version of the antenna, other than reports I have heard from those that use
them. I have not heard any complaints about the performance or quality of
construction of the current generation of Larsen antennas.

I just dusted off my old Larsen 5/8 antenna and set it on the car for
another trip. I have been using the same antenna and coil for over 30 years
now and it works fine. I am on my second mag mount, but still have the
original.
I bought this from Jim Larsen's old operation in Vancouver, Washington
before he went corporate.
It works as good as the day I got it, which is more than I can say about the
dozen or more cars I have used it on during that time.

They do not male one specifically for 2 meters. You need to buy a regular
one and cut the whip to the proper length.

Here are a few model numbers I found on their web site:

LA150B LA150C NMO150B NMO150C NMO150U NMO150BK NMO150CK

Ringo Ranger II . 2 5/8 waves vertical . But multipath is
much lower with

a vertically polarized 4 element beam with the mounting pole as the
"screen".

Gain is good , but when the vertical , omnidirectional antenna gains
up

both signals , you lose !

I dont know of an easier antenna to build . You must use the
foam type

coax for the capacitor , solid P.E. is too losy at VHF/UHF .

Dont use a rotator / motor combo . Make ur own solenoid driven
rotator , using

2 solenoids ,one to drive a big wheel to the R , other drives it L .

When idle , they lock the position .

KC7CC at yaho dot com Guadalajara MX ...

BTW Whats the simplist Linux to install on Sony 920 Notebook ?

Never saw a Ringer Ranger II on a mobile, but I guess it could be done.

New Tronics makes the Hustler CG-144... 5/8 wavelength on top of a 1/4
wavelength w/ phasing stub between... 5.2dB gain:
http://www.new-tronics.com/. Same electrical performance as the Cushcraft
ARX-2B.

A big Plus with the Larsen 5/8 wave 2 meter mobile
antenna is it will work on 6 meters as well as a
1/4 wave antenna. The Larsen is the only 2 meter 5/8
antenna that seems to work on 6 meters.

Larsen became "Radiall Larsen" a few years back and apparently have now
become a part of "Pulse Electronics". The antenna you are looking for
is still available. You will want an NMO150. There are several
varieties of the NMO150...some black, some chrome, etc. You will need
to research it to see what fits your needs.

http://productfinder.pulseeng.com/productList/WIRELESS%20DEVICE%20ANTENNAS/ANTENNAS-1%20MHz%20TO%20512%20MHz#

Be aware the NMO150 indicates it is an "NMO" style antenna mount which
is probably the most common antenna mount for VHF/UHF mobile
applications today.
The "150" indicates the approximate mid-band point. the NMO150 is rated
from 144-173mhz. You will need to cut the whip to the appropriate length.

Be aware also, there are are NLA mounts. These are "Larsen" mounts and
are less common.

The above link has antenna models which include a PDF link with specific
antenna specifications. If you look at the PDF document, you will see
some rated at 5/8 wavelength.

I am certain the many of the Ham Radio distributors such as AES, HRO,
etc would stock them.
