Hello,

I have Kantronics KPC-3 Version 5 Firmware. Is it possible to configure the
TNC for APRS? Or do I need version 6, with the GPS commands?

If anyone can help me get set up I would really appreciate it.

Thanks

Paul.

Depends on what you are trying to do. If you just want to run APRS on a
PC, it'll work fine. If you want to build a stand alone tracker, you'll
need the prom upgrade. The current one is 8.2, and about $60 from
Kantronics. I understand there are images of that prom available, but
using them would be wrong. ;-)

What I want to do is use my Garmin GPS12XL and the TNC in the car, for APRS
use. No computer hooked up. Can the TNC be programmed to work this way?
If so, can you tell me how?

Thanks.

You will need to upgrade to at least version 6.2 EPROM to use the GPS
features. I will be upgrading 2 TNC's to the latest version if you want
to buy the old EPROMS.

You're right Tom, but Paul wants to use the KPC-3 for a stand alone tracker
without a PC hooked to it. To hook it directly to a NMEA GPS Paul needs
version 6.0 or above.

Version 6.0 of the firmware adds GPS interfacing capability. Eight new
commands are added and the intface command is modified. (Taken from the
KPC-3 manual addendum for version 6.0)

You sure about that? I thought 6.0 was where the GPS features were
implimented.

Thanks to all that replied. But this has thrown me for a loop.

I have the KPC3 version 5 and it works fine with APRS.

Oh, I stand corrected then! Sorry...

You might be right. I thought that the 6.2 addendum had the "new" GPS
commands detailed in it. Once you have the correct EPROM it works
great, I have set up 3 trackers with KPC-3's so far.

I guess I was wrong on the 6.2 version. I did not have the
documentation on hand.

I think you guys have the wrong numbers.

'Ver 8.2' has features that allow the tnc to be connected to a gps and send
the NMEA data over the air. This allowed a setup with a tnc, radio and gps
to be used as a tracker for other APRS stations. The 8.2 could be a full
APRS station if the computer had an additional serial port.

The '8.3' version allows a gps to be connected to the radio port of the tnc
so you could have an APRS station with a computer with only one serial port.

BTW the KPC-3+ while a good tnc is not very user friendly. Get some help
from the aprssig group that can be found at www.tapr.org.

Actually, an older KPC-3 with version 6.0 firmware does work with a GPS
for stand-alone tracker purposes, with the INT set to GPS. If you have
an HSP cable, then you can use a laptop at the same time with the TNC in
TERMINAL mode. I used this combination for months, then got a KPC3+
with version 8.2 and continued to use the HSP, and eventually got a
firmware upgrade to version 8.3 so I could get rid of the HSP cable.
That way I could also leave it to run by itself as a tracker when the
laptop wasn't hooked up. So if someone does find a KPC-3 with version
6.0 firmware, it will work, just not the same as a newer KPC-3+ with 8.3
firmware.

The other responces are mostly correct. 6.0 is the first version for
KPC3 (non plus model) to have the NMEA GPS functions.
The next and last version for a KPC3 was 8.2 which added stuff for
making your KPC3 into a digipeater. The KPC3+ latest version (8.3) as
mention in a couple replys added a software serial port so the GPS
data could come in via this, instead of the DB25 serial port. All the
settings for KPC3 6.0, 8.2 and KPC3+ 8.2, 8.3 are in this page:

There is other APRS items at the main web page at:

The KPC-3 with v6.0 will work with APRS. I know, that's what I use.

You only need the GPS commands if you intend to make it a tracker.
APRS software dosen't need anything beyond a plain TNC-2 and anything you're
likely to see today will work.

Welcome to APRS!
