Hello,
I have a Pro-75 (handheld scanner) and a HTX-242 (2m mobile ham) both in my
vehicle. I use them both to scan frequencies, many of them are the
frequencies are in both. Both are on separate antennas. Both are plugged
into the same cigarette lighter. Whenever my HTX-242 is stopped and a
frequency (to monitor/talk, whatever), the Pro75 will stop on the frequency
and make a small noise (does not do it when I take the antenna off). If I'm
scanning, and both happen to be on the same channel at the same time, the
same thing will happed.

Besides separating the units, does any one have any ideas what to do?

Thanks!

Firstly I would be changing the power source and not using the cigarette
lighter plug. Run a dedicated power line from the car battery to the 2m
radio and this should defeat the problem.

OK, that was one of my first Ideas, since the ham radio ought to be on the
battery anyway......
I've got a company vehicle and just wanting to keep it as simple as
possible.

That makes it more difficult, however it is not to hard to run a power cable
through the firewall - there are usually sufficient holes (with rubber
gromets) to do this. Another option would be to take the power directly off
the fuseblock.

not if he us running a 50 watt radio you don't. The fuse block is where he
will get alot more noise from the alternator and the plugs firing as well as
the heater motor. best to run a set thru the firewall and hook the radios
there.
I have a box I made I just took some banana jacks and plugs put them together
in a plastic box with fuses on each power take off(mine was 4 outlets) and I
also ran a noise filter about 10 to 30 amps before the fuse(s) and tied the
equipment thru it. My scanner and CB are wired into the box. The dual band
radio I have is tied directly to the input of the box so it can draw what it
needs and cuts the interference down.

Anything is better than the ciggy lighter, even the fuse box, and noting
that he has a company car he would probably be a bit reticent about making
holes for wiring. I agree with the your "power box" idea, I have run
several variations of the same idea. My best effort has been a commercially
purchased fused power box that can easily handle 100+ amps - and yes the
cable to the power distribution box can handle that sort of juice. The
problem is in running the cable - at about half inch diameter, getting it
through the firewall can be entertaining to put it mildly. Power wise, I
currently have all my radios hardwired in but have been meaning to put the
power distribution box into the current vehicle so that I can run other
gear, so I will be putting it it in sooner rather than later.
Terry, if you are able to then run your power for the 2m rig direct to the
battery, but if you are unable to then at least move it away from the ciggy
lighter - not where I would even think of running from if there were any
other options available.
