I am considering purchasing an FT-7100M, but I have seen a disturbing number
of poor reviews (http://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/1357?page=1). Sounds
like this model may have some serious problems...does anyone else some some
insight to add?

YES!!!!!!

The FT-7100 is a complete piece of shit! It's receiver is a joke, A total
joke. Not only does it intermod like crazy, but it overloads and desenses.
Run a side by side comparasion against a decent RCVR (like a Kenwood
TM-G707A) and see what your missing. The only main differance between it
and it's older cousin (FT8100) is that it's ALWAYS bad and not intermittant
like the "8100". Test drive a Kenwood TM-G707A if you can do with one band
at a time. If you must have 2 bands up at a time, check out the TM-V7. Just
*MY* opinion....but I wouldnt run a *FREE* FT-7100 in my vehicle or
home.......Eddie

I second exactly what Eddie says. STAY AWAY FROM THEM ! I had three of them
in a row and finally got the hint.

BAD MOJO !

Kenwood makes a great TM-V7A which is what I have now (running as base). The
707A is very good (have one of those too) but I like the cross-band repeat
offered with the V7A.

My neighbor has one. Went through two to get a *good* one.
Trick is to get one with three colored dots on the box end. That shows its
been upgraded and supposedly the intermod is fixed. I have to say though its
rx is piss poor. My little icom 2100 out rxs it big time.
My neighbor wants to sell his... LOL! He is looking at Alinco.

Hmm, that's interesting.
I'm running an Icom IC2000H here, and it seems pretty good, though the heat
sinks gets kinda warm when talking for a while at 8 watts out...
The only other thing I can comment on is that the display is hard to see if
viewed from an angle below the face.
Very sensitive unit, or so it seems.
I would recommend an Icom at this point, but not saying others are not
good, as most of my past experience was with Mocoms and Motracs...
Usually, reviews can warn of possible problems, and when more than one says
a unit is not good, one should take heed.

I bought one before I read any of the reviews :-(. The first thing I
noticed was decreased receive sensitivity, and when I talked, I was told I
was over deviating; to speak farther away from the mic. There is a menu
item that allows you to turn the mic deviation down, however. That,of
course, doesn't fix the sensitivity or reduce the intermod.

I have an ft-7100M, and I have no problems. When they first came out, there
were some serious intermod problems, but those have been handled by the factory
by now.

I have a 7100 and it works great. I use it everyday for 3 months now. It's
very sensitive and it has great audio. I have been repairing
many of the 8000 series mostly for blown PA and blown front ends. It's true
that on the 8000 series the PA's were bad from the factory and had improper
cooling for full power output. Haven't had any 7100s come through the bench
yet. I have to say though, that the way many of the new radios are currently
designed, is with strictly cost savings in mind and not long term trouble free
operation.
So far, the Icom IC-706MK2G is the most recommended do it all radio. 73 Chris

I have a 7100 and the only problem i have is that i have to hold the mike
far away from the radio so the cord is streched out to make it work. when
the cord has slack, it won't work right.

Send it back and get it fixed. You should not need to stretch out the cord to
make it work. If it is still inder waranty why wait.
