Hello,

My name is Joe Humberger KB9TFH, I am going to be purchacing an Icom
W32a in a couple weeks. The reason for posting this message is that i was
woundering if there are some things i should know about this radio, The
Pro's and the Con's. A friend recomended this radio so i know very little
about it. I would appreaciate any info given. And if you have this radio,
Please tell me what u like and don't like about this radio.

Thanks,
Joe Humberger KB9TFH

I have one of these radios and am very happy with it. It's easy to use. The
entire keypad can light up and the display is easy to read, so it can double as
a mobile radio very nicely. That's what I did. I use it in my car attached to
a Maha docking amp. My only regret is that I didn't get the programming
software when I bought the radio. 200 memories is a lot to keep track of.

If you plan to use the crossband repeat feature, don't run both bands at high
power. The radio will get REAL hot. If I'm crossbanding from 440 to 2M I only
have the 2M side on high if I need to, and the radio still gets extremely warm.

I have one of these radios and I like it a lot. However, because of the wide
front end, it tends to get swamped due to cell phones and pagers if you are
in the vicinity of one of the towers. I have resolved this with an amp with
a built in filter. I know of others who have purchased a notch filter to
remove the troublesome signals. I agree with the other person who responded
if you can get the software and the cable up front. The programming is much
easier on the PC.

Yes, get the software and cable. I purchased the software and cable with
the radio and made it much easier to program all of those memories, offset,
PL tones and etc.

I bought one last month and am very happy with it. The PL scan function
was a nice bonus since I travel a lot and don't always have my repeater
directory with me.
I'm thinking about getting the HM-75A microphone since I have trouble
hearing. Can anyone comment on the audio quality/level of this mic?

I have a IC-W3a also I really like it but the yaesue FT-50rd in my opinion
is a better radio. It has most of the same functions and capabilities but it
has a better a wide band receiver with W-FM N-FM and AM receive, you can
receive TV stations and whatever else all the way up to 1 gig I think
(maybe higher)

I bought the W32A for a ham radio, I don't even have mine set to wide receive.
That's why I have a scanner.

The Radio Shack speaker mic works fine with this radio. I think that
it's cheaper than the ICOM version.

Too each his own, I guess. I love my IC-W32A.
At least ICOM got ONE of their radios right! ;->

Yes...my IC2100H 2-meter mobile sucks too.

I have a w32A and it is very good. One thing you need to know is that you
should avoid using an external power supply as much as possible because the
repetitive movement of the plug in the socket on the radio does damage to
the socket. This is general for all radios, but it seems to be compounded in
w32a because the jack is on top and is more susceptible to pulling from the
chord which typically runs over the back of the radio. The thing is, when
the damage happens, it causes a short which forces the radio to deploy its
voltage protection and not turn on. This is just something which I picked up
from this NG about a year ago. In essence, it is ok to charge the battery by
the jack on the radio (drop in charger is still better). It is undesirable
to use the radio with a chord plugged in tugging on the jack.

So what's wrong with the IC-2100H? I have one and think it's a pretty good
radio. Actually, it's a great radio when you consider the price. I also
have the IC-W32A and think it's the best dual band HT going. Back to the
2100H, I also have an IC-2710 and think the 2100 challenges it in
performance, especially considering the price...

If you haven't figured out that I like ICOM products, note that I also have
an IC-756 for a little HF work.

Cheers,

I have the W-32A with the HM-75 mic. I love it! No problems with either one.

Well Joe, What is your experience with this radio? It's been some time since your post. Mine absolutely sucks. Doesn't receive worth a flip except for the strongest repeaters. Useless for use in talkie to talkie except at very close range. Other HTs receive when I do not. I hate this thing.
