You can trace an e-mail as far back as the mail server that the person
logged into to send it. But you can connect to any mail server for which
you have a valid account from anywhere in the world.

Sign up for free Yahoo mail in Possum Run, Kansas. Travel to Bumfuck,
Egypt, get on the Internet, and you can use the same Yahoo account. You
will also use the same mail server and your messages can be traced only as
far back as that server.
