I thought it would be interesting to start a thread about the best quotes about
guitar. Unfortunately I can't find the exact quote, but it's very similar to
this:

"He's an American and he uses humbucking pickups. That's a bad combination."
-Yngwie Malmsteen

I found that hilarious. Anyone got some good quotes?

Here come some unfunny ones:

"Chord names are in my subconscious, and I'm aware of them. But I'm more
conscious of them as a collection of lines that swim - they're going
someplace. If the lines are swimming, let them go where they want,
because they are free entities. And if they wind up in utter disaster,
don't give up; give them swimming lessons. If I start to think, "This is
this chord, and that is that chord, and when this note changes while
that line moves against these sustained notes it becomes this chord,"
it's too academic; I'm making a calculator out of it. I want to listen
to those tones, to the overall effect. If I don't, I won't be able to
guide those lines that want to go someplace. The bottom line is
intervals - that's the way my mind works - and they don't have to have
any names. They are just this far apart or that far apart. I'm conscious
of each note's relationship to every other note; it's actually an air
gap."

---- George Van Eps

The best way to keep improving is to have a guitar lesson every day.

---- Randy Rhoads

The best part of playing the guitar was that it wasn't taught at school.

---- Jimmy Page

In the Blues format, I can almost lose consciousness; it's like seeing
in the dark.
---- Eric Clapton

I play when I'm inspired to play, and I definitely don't practice
scales.

---- Adrian Belew

The guitar is a portable weapon.

Wonderful quote!

Here're some more I love, from the book 100 guitar tricks you shouldve been
told:

"It's not about technique, it's not about what kind of instrument you play or
how loud it is or how quiet it is; it's about how it feels and how it makes you
feel when you play" - Eric Clapton

I have found that quote very inspiring.

"You never can learn enough with any intrument. I don't practice as much as I
used to, but when I was really into my late teens and early 20's, I kept a
guitar by the bed with the radio turned down real low. Nobody would hear it
except me, and every time a guitar would come on and you'd hear something,
you'd grab the damned guitar right then and get as near to what you heard as
you can. If you could sleep with that guitar in your hand it wouldnt be too
much guitar. Yeah, you need to fool with that thing as often as you can and as
long as you can, and if you love it like I do you would be one of the best.
Spend as much time with it as you can, more than you can, even though you know
youve got to put it down some time. Every chance you get you put that damned
thing in your hand and you fool with it!" - Buddy Guy

"When I was six I took guitar lessons and gave up the guitar because the first
thing the guy did was show me how to read, and started to teach me notes and
music theory, which had nothing to do with palying guitar. I would do enormous
emounts of work on the maths of music without the reward of hearing something
that I liked. After a month of lessons I could maybe play the first few notes
of a nursery rhyme, whereas I wanted to play a bit of rock n roll, which he
probably could have shown me just as easily" - Paul gilbert

That quote is the absolute key to teaching beginners. At least in my
opinion... play stuff you enjoy!

"I got my first Gibson for 80 pounds. It was a Les Paul Special, a cherry
one... God, I loved that guitar." - Mark Knopfler

In response to why did you start guitar: "I liked the way it sounded" - Frank
Zappa

On open chords: "You can take any one of our songs and move them up and play
them as barre chords and they're just not the same songs anymore. They've lost
width and depth somehow." - Malcolm Young

"Hank Marvin had a Strat and it was all I ever wanted" - David Gilmour

"I wrote "Shoe Me The Way" in the morning and "Baby I Love Your Way" just as
the sun was setting the same day. I'm still trying to work out what I had for
breakfast." - Peter Frampton

"I was interested in the white rock and rollers until I heard Freddy King.
Then I was over the moon! I knew thats where I belonged, finally" - Eric
Clapton

"There's so much more to life than scales" - John Etheridge

"I know too many players who don't have a lot of knowledge about scales and
modes, and those players tend to play from the heart more." - Dimebad Darrell

"I'm an emotional lush. I cry at The Hunchback of Notre Dame, you know?" -
Steve Vai

"If you learn a few good scales then that's enough, it's much better to learn
two or three really well than to learn a million and a half just so you can say
that you can play the Hungarian Gypsy minor!" - John Etheridge

"I don't think about what I do, I really don't... put it this way: you've got
this many notes - twelve notes. However you use them is up to you. None of
this "I'm play the phygian mode." However you want to play them is up to you"
- Edward Van Halen - a great quote - I recommend EVH interviews for lots of
great quotes

"I also felt the guitar became a different instrument when it was turned up to
maximum and fully distorted - it was no longer a polyphonic intrument, really -
so it seemed to be crying out to be orchestrated, and I could hear just what it
would be like in my head. This is long before queen, and long before Smile,
which was the group before that. Then there were a few things that reinforced
that feeling. For instance, Jeff Beck's hit "Hi Ho Silver Lining" had a bit in
the middle where he double tracked the guitar, and just for a moment it breaks
into harmony. I dont know if that was by accident - I should ask him one day -
but I used to play that over and over again and just revel in that sound, and I
thought that, if you could get hold of that sound and make a feature of it, and
if it were not just two guitars but as many as you needed to make a proper
arrangement, the possibilities would be endless. So as soon as we got into the
studio, I was on the trail" - Brian May

"WHat you learn you have to interpret in a way that's right for you. To simply
copy the people around you is antiproductive... if you want to be a virtuoso,
by all means dont be embarassed, and if you want to just plug into your amp and
slam out distorted, untuned chords, don't be embarrassed about that either." -
Steve Vai

"What do I represent to young players? I have no idea. I dont know where
theyve gone in their heads now, what their influences are. It sporbably
nothing to do with what my contribution was. I have no idea... I was just
lucky to be in the right place at the right time and very fortunate to have
survived" - Eric Clapton

"If I think of a guitar part but I cant actually do it as well as Id like to
hear it done then I'll get someone who can" - David Gilmour

"I was playing the blues, I guess, same as I'm playing now. Ive just updated
that same thing. Sometimes I wonder what keeps me going, but I do just keep on
going. And I love it - I figure it must be God, or whatever, you know?" -
John Lee Hooker

Those are about all the good ones from the book, I hope you guys enjoyed those.
I didnt check over them or look at the screen so forgive typos please!

FZ was a good source of quotes. Here's my favorite:

"From the very beginning when I used to hear those solos on those old
records I used to say: now here is an instrument that is capable of spewing
forth true obscenity, you know? If ever there's an obscene noise to be made
on an instrument, it's going to come out of a guitar... Let's be realistic
about this, the guitar can be the single most blasphemous device on the face
of the earth. That's why I like it ... The disgusting stink of a too-loud
electric guitar: now that's my idea of a good time."

My guitar teacher for about a year, Ron Rosenberger, once said about
Jimi Hendrix...

Referring to the famous E-maj7-sus4 Hendrix chord.

Without that chord he would've just been another truck driver.

Rather funny and yet very profound. Of course he was much more of a
guitarist than just that one chord, but it certainly made a big
difference in his music and sound.

You really mean E7#9, right? Jimi had a lot of great chords, like the
ones in 'Castles Made Of Sand' and 'One Rainy Wish', etc.,etc.

Particularly funny is the fact that there is no such legit chord as an
E-maj7-sus 4 Hendrix chord. The only people who feel that way about Hendrix
and his influence are people who have not listened to Hendrix. If you can
find an E-maj7-sus4 chord and/or an E7#9 chord in Little Wing, The Wind
Cries Mary, Castles Made Of Sand, Third Stone From The Sun, or Villanova
Junction, feel free to let me know. That's a seriously ignorant statement to
come from anyone, never mind a teacher.

A couple of these are more about guitarists than guitars, but I

The first printing of "The Heavy Guitar Bible"
(1979)http://www.heavyguitar.com/HeavyGuitarBible.html

had some quotes in the back; they were quite good and varied-

Examples:

"It was 'Baby, Let's PLay House' by Presley. You've got to understand in
those days, 'rock and roll' was a dirty word. I heard that record and
wanted to be a part of it. I knew something was going on. The instruments
generated so much energy I had to be a part of it."
-- Jimmy Page

"It's faults or it's perfections lie in whoever plays it, and not in the
guitar itself; for I have seen some people accomplish things on one string
for which others would need the range of an organ"
-- Gaspar Sanz ( 1640-1710)

"My whole being was seized by an indescribable happiness as I began to play
the guitar, for it's tone was deep and sweet in the bass notes, diaphanous
and vibrant in the higher ones. And it's accent, the soul of it's voice
was noble and persuasive. I forgot everything but the guitar..."
-- Andres Segovia

And my personal favorite:

"When I open my eyes I can only sigh, for what I see is contrary to my
creed; and I must despise the world for not percieving that music is a
higher revelation than any wisdom or philosophy. It is the wine that
inspires new creations, and I am the Bacchus, who presses this wine for
men, and makes men spritually drunk; when they are sober they bring to
shore alll kinds of things which they have caught.
God is nearer to me than to others. I approach him without fear, I have
always known Him. Neither am I anxious about my music, which no adverse
fate can overtake, and which will free him who understands it from the
misery which afflicts others."

-- Ludwig von Beethoven

Enjoy
