I caught a thread like this on alt.guitar.bass, and I thought it would
be interesting to see about people on this NG.

Me? I'm a writer/journalist and university lecturer...

And I play the blues...

I teach kindergarten, and wrote an album for the teenie-wee nies
"Kindergarten Blues". The job allows me to play for about 1/2
hour a day...justifed by the fact that the tunes a write have
content in them from the curriculum."ABC Blues" is a much
cooler alphabet song than Mozart's. "Too Bad, So Sad" goes
through the days of the week. "New Baby Blues " has addition,
much like "Sweet Home Chicago"... 1+1 is 2....2+2 is 4...They're
fussin over you, I'm gettin' ignored".

There have been some posts lately regarding nut material and which is
best (plastic, bone, brass). General consensus is harder is better with
one guy saying he wished he could get a diamond nut but it would cost more
than his guitar. Damn, cut to fit probably more than his car.

Also there has been mention of LSR rollernuts and there relative merits,
ie helps hold tuning and nice hard stainless steel balls.

I can possibly offer a solution by combining these two threads.

Synthetic ruby has a Rockwell or Knoop hardness rating which is comparable
to that of diamond (100) and I think slightly exceding that of tungsten
carbide (91.5). For comparison the Rockwell rating for 316 stainless
steel is 25-40 and chrome steel is 60-67.

Very inexpensive ($3.70 each for 3/32" dia.) perfectly spherical ruby
balls are available from various suppliers (eg Small Parts Inc,
www.smallparts.com) that should drop right into a LSR rollernut. Saphires
are also available if the color suits you.

You would then have a virtually perfect low-friction extremely hard
bearing surface for your strings to sit in.

I'm not a metalurgist or gemologist so if any of the values quoted are
slightly off let me know, but you get the idea.

If someone in their "quest for tone" is "nutty" enough to try this let me
know if it made a difference.

nick.

Diamond and corrundum (ruby, sapphire) are both way, way, way harder

I'm a freelance guitar sort of person. Mostly that involves being music
editor for Guitarist magazine (which, strangely enough, doesn't actually
involve much music editing; mainly transcribing, instructional articles,
product reviews and recording stuff for the monthly CD) but I also do
outside projects (couple of books of transcriptions, my own book Legends
and some stuff for the French "Guitar & Bass" mag). Oh, and some guitar
teaching, although not as much as I used to do.

Hey, Derek! Meet up with you in some pretty strange places, eh? Didn't
know you were a Tele fan, too. I have a black '90s Tele with gold

I worked for a radio station as an audio / recording engineer for ten years &
also did some pro/semi-pro guitar playing (mostly commercials and albums). I
got kicked out during the recession, then started to study for a BSEE & work
as a part-time programmer for a cellular network operator. And sure, I still
play...

You also can't get smooth curves on a diamond, so it would contact the
string in a blade-like manner, cutting into it.

<blush> I'm flattered now, Adrian. Basically, think of me as the cable guy
with a degree. :) I typically go out and program a variety of equipment to
interface a school's computer laboratory with our WAN. This involves getting
the interface to talk over a digital data circuit, which means I spend some
time dealing with the phone company. Once the data circuit is esablished and
proven to work, I interface the school's equipment to ours, either using their
existing network, or by "hardwiring" each of the computers they intend to use
to our interface at the school.

Now all that being said, I'll be moving to more of an engineering/consulting
role with the same company in a few months.

And when I grow up, I want to be a tech writer! :)

Cheers and Stuff,

Much less lucrative than that, although some folks think I should be put in
jail. Probably should say I usually distribute the decoded/or
electromagnetically converted information (music) through my own media for
'legal' performances per my clients needs. I'm a mobile and club DJ.

Former fulltime musician (18 yrs).

I still play guitar professionally in clubs, concerts and events- although
it's really a labor of love. It does generate enough '1099 income' to require
listing on my taxes.

12 years ago I left fulltime music and entered the corporate world. I began
climbing (lucrative) ladders. I was the with the nation's largest Radio Common
Carrier (wireless) for 8 years, 4 of those as regional sales manager, 4 as Bay
Area General Sales manager. I then took a promotion to manage the Silicon
Valley Operation for the nation's 2nd largest RCC, 4 years.

The current third major wave of major consolidations in this volatile
industry (and accompanying rapid changes) brought me to a major decision last
year, when faced with yet another corporate promotion. It (typically)
involved 30-40% more responsibility and 5% more pay. I wasn't enjoying going
to work daily at this point...not even close.

Thru my corporate life, I had never given up my musical pursuits and worked
pretty close to a full schedule of weekend events both as a DJ and a
guitarist. I realized the only time I was enjoying myself was doing music-the
corporate wireless industry is nothing like it was in 1985. After some
(brief) soul searching, I decided if I was ever gonna have another shot at
making a living at Doing Something I Loved, this was the time.

So, I left the company on good terms. I am rehireable (hope that's never
necessary) and am using my 20+ years of networking in the local music scene
to build my own business. I've had to adjust my living style to fit my "grow
the business" income level. My stress level is waay down, and I'm loving life
again. I'm also able to practice quite a bit and find myself playing as well
as I ever did fulltime, at least according to the archive tapes I've listened
to. I look forward to scheduling time to get formal lessons, as there are
some genres and accompanying theory that are beckoning.

Overall, there are challenges taking a career leap like this, but I feel very
fortunate to have been in a position to do it...
