When the "Crybaby" pedals came out, I assumed they were named after the
effect/sound used in the old (about 1966) Boxtops' hit song, "Cry Like A
Baby". In fact, I've never heard the "Crybaby" or any other "wah" pedal
allow a guitar to produce the effect heard on that hit record. I *have*
heard that "Cry Like A Baby" effect on a few other pop tunes since 1966
but was never able to learn what instrument or pedal caused such a sound
to be produced. I find the sound fascinating, and would love to be able to
include it in my own band sometime. Can anyone give me an authorative
answer to the sound's source, so I can put the question to rest?

cheers, lar

Here's a question for you...
How many times do you read other peoples' signatures and think, "Are they ever going to change them?" <:-|

It's a Danelectro/Coral electric sitar.

The sound you are referring to is probably the Coral Electric Sitar. I haven't
heard "Cry Like A Baby" in years, but as it runs through my head, that's what I
hear. The Electric Sitar is not a sitar at all but rather a guitar with a
special bridge that produces the "zing" effect. Most of them were built with an
additional set of sympathetic drone strings. The best-known recorded example of
the Electric Sitar is the solo on "Hooked On A Feeling."

IMHO, I believe the Crybaby was named for the sound it produced - 'Wah Wah
Wah'. Sounds like a baby to me (I've got two... babies that is!).

Didn't Vox make the first Crybaby?

The sound you are referring to is an Electric Sitar. made by Danelectro and
sold under the Danno or Coral name, It was used on many hit records . Jerry
Jones is currently making a knock off of this supurb instrument ( mine is sea
foam green crackle finish ) for around a grand. An original 60s version will
cost twice that unless you get lucky & find one at a yard sale. Hey, it can
happen. Maybe Danno will reissue this one next!

If my memory serves me that particular song had a part done by an
instrument that had a fleeting moment of popularity back in
1967/68...a Coral electric sitar...I don't believe it was actually a
sitar but rather a standard guitar with a set of drone strings..others
in this group may have more precise and concise information concerning
that instrument but I believe that's the sound you're looking for..it
was also used on another hit of that time "Hooked On A Feeling" but I
can't for the life of me remember the group...as for its availability
you might try vintage guitar shows..I believe there was also a
DanElectro electric sitar...as for cost it seems everything old is
"vintage" even the crappy stuff that at the time no one wanted
anything to do with..good luck
