I was just wondering if anybody knows anything about a dillion les paul.

I purchased one recently and it feels better than epiphone and the
current gibson LP standard. I did play an '85 LP and it felt more like
that. I also heard that its made by a sister company of tokai
I was just curious if anybody knows anything else about the guitar.

Look, Dillion guitars are made in Korea. How many guitar factories are
there in Korea? Two: Cort and Samick. So Dillion guitars have a 50/50
chance of being made in the same factory as Tokai's current Korean crop
(which look EXACTLY like Epi LPs to me, btw). Since both Korean guitar
factories outsource most of their hardware (tuners, bridges, pups) to
smaller parts factories around Korea and Asia in general, the chances of
your Dillion LP sharing the same parts as a Korean Tokai LP, Epi LP or
Samick LP are pretty much 100%. So, you have the same parts put together
by the same people in the same factory... ya, they must be ALOT better
than the Epi LP.

Korean guitars are better today than they ever were, but they're still not
"brand" instruments in the sense of a G&L or Tom Anderson or PRS or even a
Mexican Strat. All these Korean guitars are farmed out of the same two
factories with slightly different finish options and headstock shapes and
a different name stamped on the guitar, and people think there's a big
difference between them? In the case of Korean made guitars, I think the
perceived differences are between individual instruments and not so much
the "makes". One of the things the Koreans have really learned is that a
good finish sells - god only knows how many peices of what wood are
buried under the layers of laminates and polyurethane on these things...
but lets face facts: you can't build a guitar out of great quality wood, put
good hardware on it, and ship it halfway around the world and then sell it
for $350 and hope to make a profit - remember, labour costs in South Korea
are lower than here, but the aren't THAT much lower.

jim - tired of "new" Korean guitars

I've got a Dillion guitar... actually it's a dead-on copy of a GMP guitar,
right down to the silver sparkle finish! Really nice... it was originally $795
but it was marked down to $250 (Canadian $$$) because no one had ever heard of
Dillion and didn't want an "unknown"! This guitar blows away any Epi and maybe
a few Gibsons, too! The workmanship is excellent, sound is superb...

I NEVER said I hate Korean guitars... Of course, I don't own any, and I
own MANY guitars, but I never hated any of the Korean guitars I have
owned. Some were very decent instruments. But there is NO "Tokai" factory
in Korea, there is no "Dillion" factory in Korea, there is no "Epiphone"
factory in Korea... It's a misconception that I am beginning to believe is
actually encouraged on the part of the manufacturers there (and the
distributers here) - when's the last time a guitar magazine had a "tour" of
a Korean factory? Tokai is just a name right now - they're trading on the
reputation of their old guitars but unless you buy a JAPANESE Tokai,
you're getting the same guitar as the guy who bought an Epiphone or a the
guy who bought a Dillion, and you had better want to know that, because
last time I looked, the new Tokais were more expensive than either.... Be
an informed consumer..
