I have numerous Boss pedals, some Taiwanese, some Japanese, and do not see any
real difference in build quality between the two factories. Be aware, however,
that Boss, like most companies, makes changes in the circuit boards from time
to time because of parts availability, cost, etc. In some cases the earlier
version of the circuit was made in Japan, the later one in Taiwan, and so there
may be a difference in the sound as a result of that. I can't cite any specific
examples. I haven't had the opportunity to hear a Taiwanese CE-2 (mine's from
Japan) so I can't speak to that specifically, although that is a case where I
wouldn't be surprised if there were board revs -- the CE-2 was produced for a
VERY long time.

I just picked up a Japanese DS-1, however, and it looks and sounds exactly the
same as my much more recent Taiwanese one. Similarly, I've seen people claiming
that the Japanese SD-1s are more desireable because they have the "Tube
Screamer"
opamp, the JRC4558, in them, implying that the Taiwanese ones don't -- but I
have a relatively new (I bought it new) SD-1, made in Taiwan, with the JRC4558
chip in it, and I've never seen one that didn't have it.

Bottom line is, I think it depends on the pedal, and what sorts of circuit
revisions have happened to it over the years. Unfortunately, I know of no
comprehensive source for that information on Boss pedals. :-(

Hey,

I just happened to have my DS-1 apart for schematic-tracing; I checked
the chip on it--mine has a TA7136AP in it...dunno if that's an equivalent to
the JRC4558 or not. It's a Taiwanese version. I don't know if it really
matters which op-amp it's running, considering that I have a tendency to
open things up and change parts until (a) I like the sound or (b) it blows
up ;)

I realized after I posted that that it might be confusing. The SD-1, the Super
Overdrive, is the one that has the JRC4558 in it. Frankly, I've never looked in
the DS-1 -- the Distortion -- but I'm pretty sure they'd use something else.

The SD-1 is pretty similar to a Tube Screamer, as is the old OD-1.

Ooops! I must have had a dyslexic moment...I saw SD-1 and thought it was
DS-1...my bad...
