It's a Spanish name. The Ibanez company called their guitars that
because they didn't want them to sound Japanese. The actual name of
the company is Fuji Gen Gakki, if I'm not mistaken.

From my experience with their guitars I would guess it stands for bloody
excellent... no, let's not get into an Ibanez war!
I don't think it actually "stands" for anything in Japanese; Ibanez is a
Spanish name, so presumably the company founders were trying to attract
people with a Spanish-sounding brand name.

Fuji Gen Gakki is actually the manufacturer of MANY of the guitars
seen here in the states. As long as you have the money, they'll make
guitars for almost anyone. Ibanez, Fender, and many more,,,

I always say "EYE-ba-nez", which is what most people in Britain seem to
say. Any Spanish speakers here who can tell us the real pronunciation?
Or anyone who works for Ibanez in Japan and can tell us how the company
intended the Japanese version to be pronounced?

Not just the Japanese, either. In the new language of the New Millenial
Consumer Experience (TM), "McDonalds" means "We know you love eating
dogshit in a bread roll" and "Budweiser" means "I've pissed in this
bottle; do you like it?"

Here in Spain we have always said "ee-ba-neth". Yes, Ibañez is a commun
surname here, but the guitar company has nothing to do with Spain, we don't
know where that name comes from, so we pronunce it with no "ñ" because the
name hasn't! Just that simple.

So, we could all play our ee-ba-neths, while we drink ther-vay-thas in
the thunshine of tha-ra-go-tha, no? :-)
[I have a Spanish friend who always used to insist on the PROPER
pronunciations...]

The Ibanez guitar factory is a little north of Philidelphia, PA. in the
good old USA. Funny how people naver read the fine print in the
literature that comes with the guitars they buy??? :-)

Just found out today that there's a player on the French national Rugby
team names Ibanez...
Not that rugby has much to do with guitars...

And it cost about half the price of the 'Pay for the name on the headstock'
fenders and gibsons.
And it looks really nice.

They look great, sound great and cost a fraction of what a Fender or Gibson
tonal twin would cost. I'm not at all interested in shelling out twice as much
money for a guitar simply because it has a "Cadillac" name inlayed on the
headstock!
Interesting thread. I've never been too shaken up by the Ibanez
solids, but I do think they are a good guitar for the money, and I'm
impressed by the strong *owner loyalty* they have.
