Does anyone know what sound I am talking about? There is a
Beastie Boys song that uses it a lit. We used to imitate it with a
wacca-wacca-wacca type noise (air guitaring). What is the
Guitar/style/effect combo that produces this (to my mind) very kewl
70's electric guitar sound?

It's a wah pedal.

Wangcaster through a wah - check out 'Orgazmo' - a porn parody fom
the South Park guys about a devout young Mormon who does porn movies.
Ron Jeremy also appears.

They got that sound down.

Good luck on your quest. I suggest that you research that sound fully
by going back to the original sources. She'll understand.

11 feet. and they're kinda hairy, too.

My band just added 'I will survive' to our set list. I've been having
great luck with my Dunlop Wah going through a distortion. Like somebody
else said, just pump it on every beat. Sometimes I don't even play
chords. I just percussively keep the beat going...

Have to say, even I'm aroused at the end of the song :)

You can also do it (no pun intended) using a good envelope filter instead of
a wah. I would use a wah too but I'm just too lazy ; )

My band does a disco medley (hear a shortened version at
www.themightyquinnband.com) that starts with I will survive. I only hit the
wah during the string part when there are no vocals going.

The Temptations (with motown session players Dennis Coffey or Wah Wah Watson)
hinted around at this type of clean rhythmic wah wah sound on "Papa Was A
Rolling Stone" and Sly Stone's guitarist got pretty funky with his wah wah on
their hit " Thankyoufalettinmebemyselfagain" (sp) in 1971-2

But...

The archetypical 70s wah-chicka-wah r+b rhythm guitar sound (with an occasional
wah'd-in-time note or chord fragment tossed in) can be found on Issac Hayes
"Theme From Shaft" from around 1972. It's such a grenre defining wah sound
that some present day multi-mode boutique wah pedals have a 'Shaft' setting on
their mode switches: "White Room", "Hendrix/Machine Gun", "Shaft" etc

Another nice and very tasty example of wah-chicka-wah rhythm can be found on
the proto-disco "Love's Theme," a big sounding instrumental hit which gave
Barry White his first smash - though the the studio 'group' of session players
playing White's tune and arrangement, produced by White etc- was actually
called the "Love Unlimited Orchestra."

After 'Love's Theme' put Barry on the map, he immediately started singing on
his next records under his own name- and pretty much owned the smooth romantic
(disco flavored) soul genre in the mid 70s.

I don't know who played the wah'd guitar on 'Theme from Shaft,' but Ray Parker
Jr. played the wah-chica-wahs on 'Love's Theme' when he was a session guitarist
for guys like Barry and Stevie Wonder in the early 70s.

Later Parker would become known as a smooth soul vocalist and had a string of
pop hits in the 80s along with a famous lawsuit filed against him by Huey Lewis
for 'borrowing the music' for Parker's "Ghostbusters." I had no idea Ray
Parker Jr even played guitar, much less that he was first call funk session
player on hits cut in LA in the 70s -until Barry died earlier this year and Ray
talked about how much fun he had playing on all of the big man's hits...

three important componants.
First you have the sound:
You want to use a clean amp setting with little distortion if any.
Mids are good for EQ. Dial in a little reverb but don'tgo apeshit with
it. The WAH WAH pedal will give the signature sound but only if we
have the right music going with it.
the music: you want to use a 9th chord with the root on the A string -
E9 is a good one to start with. This is THE funk/porno chord. Hold
this chord down and play some syncopated rythems with mutes spliced in
- the music will get you you WAH WAH wicki wicki WAH type sound once
you start muting and wahing (note: not palm mutes but the other kind
that are X's in tab) Another good porno music thing is is to play
octaves and melodies that use octives and sevenths
