A few years ago there was this young black guitar player who hit
the scene named Eric Gales. He was incredibly good and he won one of
those Guitar magazine awards for being the best new guitar player of '92
or something like that. He was only like 17-19 during his brief time of
semi-fame. The band that he was in was named after him in that it was
called the Eric Gales band. They were from Memphis, TN. His older
brother Eugene played rythm guitar and sang the lead vocals. I saw them
preform in a club one time and I was blown away. Eric Gales played an
upside down Strat with the high E string on top (in other words, he
didn't restring like Hendrix did). His playing sounded like a cross
between Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Eric Johnson, and, a bunch of
others including Yngwie Malmsteen. He combined all of his influences
together and sort of had his own thing going on. Anyways, the band
released a couple of albumns that I know of and they had a couple of
singles that recieved minimal air play (not for long though). I also
know that they played on the Arsenio Hall Show one time. I thought that
they were going to become big stars but then they ended up disappearing.
Last that I heard of them was in late '93. What ever happened to them?
Why did the disappear? Where are they now? If anyone knows, please
let me know.

He died. And it's Eric Gale, not Gales.

Eric Gale died a couple years ago. He was an older fellow and a wonderful
musician. His was a sort of jazz pop sound, always groove-y. He was a sublimely
tasteful player with a great tone. Any of his solo albums are worth a listen.
He is mostly known for his work with Richard Tee (also deceased) backing up
Paul Simon on a string of hits. They are also featured in Simon's film One
Trick Pony. This rhythm section also worked apart from Simon under the name
Stuff. You might have caught them on SNL.
Eric Gales is a younger guy. A Jimi-influenced Strat guy.

Anybody know if this is the same guy (listed as "Eric Gale") who
played some small but very tasty R & B licks on Paul Simon's 'Late in
the Evening' back in '78?

Different guy. Eric Gale was an older gentleman
who, to me, sounded like a jazzed up BB King. And
he had a really distinct vibrato. Been around for
a long time. I'm sure HE'S the guy that's playing
on the Paul Simon album.
Eric GaleS is a younger guy that had his first
release in the late eighties (when he was around
16-18 yrs old). A bit Hendrixy. I really liked
him. Seemed he really had it together at such a
young age when most everybody else at that time
(and at that age) was trying to SHRED. He wasn't
really about that.

Eric Gales : Eric Gales
Band ~1991 release " " " ~Picture of
A Thousand Faces ~ 1993
The Gales Brothers ~ Left Hand Brand
~1996 Manuel Gales is one of Eric's brothers who plays on
the Gales Bros. album (which is great by the way) also has a solo career
and goes by the name of "Little Jimmy King " . I think he's
got 3 or 4 albums out.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Eric Gales' first release came out in the early '90s. In fact, I
haven't heard anything about him since late '93. As I stated earlier,
I saw him in a club one time and I'll have to say that he was one of the
absolute best guitar players that I've ever seen in my life (and I've
seen a LOT of great guitar players). And yes, he could shred but he
did it with taste and feeling. Anyways, I'm still wondering what in
the hell happened to him. He seemed to be on the verge of major rock
stardom back in late '93 and since then he's seemed to have fallen off
the face of the earth.

Oops. You're right. The first album was released
in '91. Ah well, "late eighties, early nineties"?
Who'd really know the difference in 50 years?
Close enough for RnR and all that! : ) Sorry for
the miss.
Also, I didn't mean to imply that he couldn't
"shred". He played (plays) w/ a LOT of passion and
fire and got really good sounds. In my mind,
"shred" conjures up a whole different type of
player.
Anyways........

Re: Eric Gales...

He initially started out playing as "Little Jimmy King"... what I
understand was a way of paying tribute to Jimmy hendrix and to Albert
King... He is still playing around Memphis... I saw him up on Beale Street
not long ago... not playing... such in a bar listening to other
musicians...
