Wondering what you all think of these? Specifically the older 90's
models. Any love, hate, opinions?

I have one of these, a '93. It's been in its case, unplayed for years.

http://home.comcast.net/~esionder/temp/3guitars2.jpg

It has some electrical problems - the rotary switch is broken, and I
haven't found a suitable replacement (PRS apparently doesn't use the
same switch or wiring scheme anymore, and I don't think they have any
more of those switches.) I hate the rotary switch, anyway, and had the
idea of rewiring it with a Gibson-type toggle switch, until I found
that that would require enlarging the hole in the body. So the guitar
has sat with it's guts out ever since.

I like some things about it - the neck plays very easily, and the
tremolo system is stable and excellent. I don't like some things about
it. I find the wide-thin neck to be uncomfortable (I like 'em beefier.)
My main complaint is the pickups. They always sounded dull and toneless
to me. I've tried replacing them, but never found anything that really
works for me.

So I have this expensive guitar (although I got it used for a very good
price) that I don't like the sound of and doesn't work anyway. I don't
know that you can draw any general conclusions from that, but that's my
experience with it so far.

Thanks for the info....kinda sucks, yours is a pretty guitar. (Nice
"tele" too by the way)I don't know if the PRS is something I really may
want but if a cheap one were to fall into my lap I want to be ready ;-)

My main beef about the one I had from the 80's (not CE, but I've
played some) was dull sound as well, beautiful workmanship, trem
worked very well too, but the pups in MANY I've played blew! Older
CE's were just as good players as the set necks.

Seems to be a 50/50 thing about the pickups (kinda like

played one other than a few times at a store....couldn't really tell
there.

If it were me, I'd either tear into the electonics (I'd hesitate doing that
with such an expensive guitar) or sell it to someone who's more of a
fixer-upper type and buy something that's more to your liking.

Did you try writing to the company about the switch?

*Personal opinion* -- I've never played OR even heard in person a PRS guitar
whose sound I liked. "Sterile" comes to mind. No character, although I
confess that's something that's hard to quantify.

I think that the design of the guitar almost guarantees it. It was
intended to fill the gap between a les paul and a strat..... but
almost winds up being 50% of each, and loses alot of the character as
well.

People know that when they pick up a strat, you are going to get a lot
of high-end overtones , some quacky chime and great upper fret access.

People know when they pick up a les paul, they are going to get a nice
fatty, punchy growl, no hum and a lot of resonance.

Try to be something in the middle and you wind up with no character of
your own - much like the multitudes of 80's/90's jacksons, ibanez with
basswood bodies, pot metal trem blocks and generic pickups......
sure, they are playable and a lot of them look nice, but they just
dont have much character.

I think there is a lot of truth to what you say....baiscally they are
a very beautiful, well made and expensive compromise.

Ah, but that gap between Strat/Tele-style single coils and LP buckers can be
filled quite nicely -- if it's done right. P90s is one way to do it, the
Burns Tri-Sonic pickups (as represented for instance by Brian May's Red
Special guitar) is another. I've got a replica of the latter, and it sure
has character -- GOOD character in my opinion.

Overwound single coils can also approach that territory - as can coil-
tapped hum buckers. A P90 is never going to sound like either. And
yes, it has a unique sound all it's own.....

I guess my point is that people expect a certain sound in a strat vs.
a les paul. A PRS tries to be a little of both - and IMO succeeds at
neither.

Don't get me wrong - they are impeccably crafted guitars, some of the
finest necks out there and they are beautiful. Their sound (to me) is
best described as 'bleh'. Not enough chime, not enough grunt. Maybe I
just don't get it.

All that being said - my #1 is a strat copy (Agile ST-802) with a
duncan JB/Jazz humbucker combo and a schaller megaswitch "P" (prs-
style switching/tapping). It is the most versatile guitar I own, and
plays like butta. When it needs to sound like a strat, it comes REAL
close - but it will never sound like a les paul.

My #2 is a les paul copy (Agile AL-4000) that is a tone monster. I
have similar coil tapping in place and the same pickups, but it will
NEVER sound like my strat. It is way too fat.
