Has anyone seen a 80's model Gallien-Krueger guitar amp? Not a bass amp,
but indeed a rhythm/lead guitar amp? I tried one for year or so when I
used to gig back in the 80's and thought I would check on out again. I
remember it doing a pretty good job for a SS amp. Back then I rotated
between Marshall, Hiwatt and Carvin tube amps, but remember this little
guy putting out some decent sound. However, I can't seem to find one
anywhere, including Ebay.

Are these hard to come by nowadays?

Searching around a bit more, I found/remembered that I had a GK 250RL
(just the head). Still no luck finding anyone that has one of these for
sale though.

Are you refering to the tiny little one with two small (<8"?) speakers?
If you are then they were quite popular here. Even a local pro guitarist
had one because they were so good. I was only wondering what happened to
them all the other day. I haven't seem one it years.

Yes, that's the one. However, the one I had didn't have the speakers, it
was just the head and was the GK 250RL model. The one with the speakers
is the GK 250ML, I believe. In my albeit brief research today, it seems
that they received good reviews from just about everyone. I remember
really liking the amp when I had it. I wish I would have held on to it
now, seems their going to be really hard to come by.

250ML's
I serviced dozens and dozens of these in the 80 as an authorized tech, GK
revised the schmetic over 3 times to get the circuit right. If you were a
loud rock player you can also cook your eggs on them in 10 minutes

250 ML "lunchbox" pre ser# 16,000 were real lemons with assorted thermal
and instabiliety problems in the audio power amp sections GK refused to
admit this and do a recall.
However GK did send its authorized service centers a service bulliton with
modification's only to be done on amps that came in within the warrentee
period or to be sold.
Some of these would pop speakers, blow just turning them on,
Fed up with all the zip pay warrentee work coming in I caught up with Bob
Gallien at the NAMM 86 show to (nicley) speak about his bullsh*t bean
counter policy. It was treated like the plague, I was immeadietly blown of
and sent to his service manager who said he'd contact me at the shop in a
couple days....never happened. What did happen was our shop was dropped as
an authorized service center....It was a BLESSING !

The larger "stepped front' 250 ML with larger speaker's, had BIG sound,
improved power amp stabiliety, speaker shut off switch on back
(serial number # 37,000 and up are the diehards) I own 2 of these
The 250 RL was the rack mount head only

After the 250 series GK came out with these guitar amps that used digital
switching power supplys, They must have just about every one of them blew
up. They were a nightmare to repair.
GK then stopped making guitar amps.

That was me, though I never thought about cooking with the thing. :D
Though, now that you mention it, I do recall that mine did get pretty warm.

Surprised to hear about all the troubles they had. I never experienced
this (I may have had a later model) and I haven't read much to this
effect. Either way, if I could get my hands on another one, that would
be a good thing. If it's lasted this long, I'd say it's likely one of
the good ones.

Thanks for your information.

For informational purposes and for those interested, here's some
pictures and other info:

Some information and sound bytes of the 250ML:

According to the second link, Nuno Bettencourt used the amp on their
"Three Sides to Every Story" release. I knew I liked that release for
some reason!

The 250ML was the one with the little 6" speakers I believe. The 250RL
was the same, but rackmounted, and no speakers.

Cool for the house, but typical crap SS sound. Being a Ted Nugent fan,
my jaw dropped when he used them extensively for his 'Little Miss
Dangerous' album in the mid 80's.... Worst guitar sound ever...

And they got really hot - they were essentially huge heat-sinks since
they were all metal - you could literally fry eggs on the top - and my
friend did just that to prove it to me once.

Having said that....... I wouldn't mind getting one for the house :)

Look up those model numbers - you'll find them. Hard to repair though -
the makers used to routinely spray-paint the components black so you
couldn't figure out what parts were in it :)

I did find some on eBay finally. Just missed one that finished a couple
of minutes ago for about $175. I was pissed. I was outbid at the last
second. I hate when that happens (which is all the time). :D

I have a couple of GK "keyboard" amps. Model 200MK. They are the same size
as the small Bass amp. but have a small tweeter mounted over the 12"
speaker.
The specs say 100 watts RMS 20Hz - 20,000Hz, I believe it. I have used them
for stereo keyboards; seems you can't break up the Bass, even cranked up.
I have used one amp for guitar; two amps work together for neat stereo
guitar. For guitar (and Bass), you need a preamp because the inputs are
line-level. I used a Korg PX4, or ART tube MP. Both work fine, the amp has a
limited reverb and compression. I have never had a problem in about 5 years
of use. Overall, a handy amp to have around.
These days, I plug-in to the main sound system. My son uses one as a stage
monitor for his keyboard/organs. He won't use anything else.

I would most definitely be interested. Could you check on it and see if
indeed it does still work? If you'd like to email me, remove the
'looseit' from the email address.

Thanks!

Update for those interested... I received the following information from
the Sales department at Gallien-Krueger:

============================

We have spent our resources in the bass community as of late. As such,
there are no guitar models available as "New". Best bet is to keep an
eye on e-bay. They go fast there.

However, we will soon release the 250ML Re-Issue. That was the most
popular model of our guitar amps.

Keep an eye on the site for info. Should be out before years end.

Hey Steve, I owned a 250ML some years ago and made the mistake of bringing it to Alto Music in Wappengers Fall, N.Y. for a repair. Long story short....it took them 3 months to fix it and I had made 2, $20 payments towards the bill. When I went to pick up my amp, I made the last payment and they then told me they sold it. They kept my $60 and after almost making a scene.... I went home with a cheap, $99 Line 6 amp. I do know where there is another G/K 250ML for sale as of 9/21/14. Don't know the price yet and I'd really like to have another one. But if you REALLY have to have one...maybe I can tell you where it is.

That made my day. Nice little story, JJ.

Don't suppose you considered going back with a large vinegar bottle,
some kerosine and a rag, and burn that establishment to the ground?

I've personally never had that happen with anything, been treated even
so much as remotely similar by a merchantile class with community
roots.

...All except for the local police department, only it was constructed
with reinforced block and built upon principles for a bunker.
Actually, I wasn't considering vinegar, per se, but a rocket until I
cooled my jets just a little.

Those ML's were cool, but honestly, they sounded like crap. Also, they

Ted Nugent used one for 'Little Miss Dangerous'... His worst sound ever.

However, interested in the Wappengers Falls angle... My parents lived
out their last 10 years there on Wodenethe Drive.... Chans Wok 2000 was
my favorite Chinese place... and the 84 Diner was a fave also...

I think they were there when 'Nobody's Fool' was filmed..

I didn't like the town much... I thought for being so far from NYC, that
it would have none of the rabble. It seemed to be worse...I wasn't happy
that my parents picked that area. But, I spent some time there, and it
seemed cool....

$250 ML and not fully operational or on last legs...
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Gallien-Krueger-GK-250-ML-Series-II-Amplifier-Guitar-Amp-
/151422246070?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2341781cb6

Fair shipping, $25, no gouging there.

Plus is reputation and low availability/rarity factor, also possibly
separable from a cab (i.e., even lower/half the price although speaker
impedances are odd-ball for this amp and can be somewhat
pushed/operationally problematic). Known for "edge-cutting" design
technology -- not balls-out, ear splitting volumes, verge smaller
non-stadium club territory, yet with a very aggressive/desirable tone
unusual for SS as a genre. Rumor mill has Iron Maiden(?) stacked
Marshalls for the show appeal to some venues, but had their signature
sounds provided by running a couple GKs from curtains hiding them
behind the Marshalls.

Like a bad dream from Blues Traveler's worst nightmare;- not that they
shred.

Seriously. If the ML's insides looks anything like this 212G, I'll
eat my sweaty shorts and take up filthy, dirty electronics' repair for
a hobby...

IIRC, Iron Maiden used the same GK head for recording in the mid-80's. Kind of the "metal sound" of that era.

I have a modified 250 RL and it's the best head I've ever played through. Love it to this day and even better than the modded MESA Triple Rectifier solo head I love so much.

Cheers!
