Can I spell STRAT correctly just once?

AFAIK the model name "Showmaster" is used by Fender with
rather reckless abandon. But basically it is a Fender Strat
body without the pickguard. Depending on which year and where
it is or was made it could have just about any type of pickup
configuration. HH is/was very common and there have been 2 pickup
models with single neck and humbucker bridge. The SSS you are
looking at is not that common and (AFAIK) the SSS models were
Made in Korea.
Depending on the price of the one you are looking at you
might think about getting just the body/neck (these are
set neck guitars) and wiring up your own set of pickups.
control pots and putting in a bridge assembly. (obviously you won't need
a pickguard). This way you can build it exactly as you want.

just an example for you to look at.
The Showmasters are generally well made and have a nice
looking wood cap on them (usually nice grain or flame top)
on top of a basswood body.
The one consistent complaint on them is the typical 'sharp fret ends'
but this can also be taken care of by yourself or any good luthier.
The fret work in general can sometimes be dodgy (high frets or frets
not very well finished/polished) but that also is a minor issue that
can be taken care of by yourself or any good luthier.
Almost all the Showmasters have a good neck angle so they should
set up very nicely (as long as the nut was cut correctly) and you
can expect fairly low and buzz free action from one that has a properly
cut nut and good frets. Again - the neck angle coming off the body
is almost always done very well.
The tuners on the Showmaster (MIK's) are certainly adequate and
AFAIK were 14:1 or 15:1 tuners. So you should be fine there.
The rosewood fretboards were also well done and the dot markers
are pearlescent (instead of plain white).
Anyways - they are generally very nice guitars and are kind of
like Strats with a different character to them. A little more
'stage look' guitar than a regular pickguard equipped Strat.
Thanks for the info. I have never been able to bond with a Strat so I
was thinking maybe the set neck, ebony board etc. would get me close
to a Strat I could love. I am going to try to see it today if it
didn't sell last night. The price was only $300 which seemed cheap
from the others I have seen for sale.
