Here are pictures of Mike Bacciarini's 1978 custom 4000 bass. Mike's bass
was a prototype for elusive 4002 model.

For more info please see my previous post.

Enjoy!

Evidently the owner/builder (Mike) installed a bass compressor/enhancer in
the bass. Basically he took a pedal and installed it in the cavity. He
used the knobs that came with the pedal.

I owned a '71 4001 that had 21 frets also. There seems to be a few of these
around.

Hmmm, this seems a long way from a 4002, a prototype, maybe of something,
not a 4002, or any 4002 that I have ever seen, As mentioned, set neck,
contured body (S style), no binding, checked or otherwise, major differences
in electronic packages, as I said, a prototype of something, maybe, but
tough to call this a 4002.. Mark may have seem this is process, but I guess
I agree with the factory, it should never have left the shop, Looks more
like a 4000, and some guy who decided to hack it. No offense, but as we all
feel about the same when it comes to "custiomizing" rics... Very nice
looking wood, love the dark headstock wings!!! wish Ric had never stopped
this!!!

Holy smokes, this looks just like my bass. Dark fingerboard, set neck,
centre stripe with dark head-stock wings, y-type tuning keys (although I
changed mine), etc. All it needs is a second pick-up and white
pickguard and name plate.

All the best,

Bootsy

Greg,

It shares some similarities with the 4002, but you're right, it's no 4002.
Maybe it's a custom built around an 'S' body with a neck originally destined
for a 4002. I don't think it's a prototype for the 4002 either, as mine is
a production unit from 1977. They were listed as a standard model in the
1975 Rickenbacker catalog, too, complete with a picture.

It does have a Switchcraft B3M XLR jack, 21 frets, Schaller M-4 tuners and
ebony fretboard like the 4002, but that's about it.

Let's be clear that this is NOT any kind of prototype, just a modified
instrument. It's also not the only 4001 with an ebony fingerboard, as a
number of such units were produced for special orders. (I still even have
some of those 4001 ebony fingerboard blanks in stock.)

The 4002 prototype still resides where it always has, at RIC headquarters.

Cheers,

Now THAT would a MOST excellent photo series--the RIC prototypes.

Then again, we'd have to wait how many years for that? ;)

So John...is that the one on page 211 of Smith's book? It's a B&W photo but it
appears to be an Autumnglo finish...is it??
