Hello,
I recently bought a Martin D-15. At least, that's what's on the receipt the
guy had from musiciansfriends.com. It appears to be a D-15 but it doesn't
have any markings on it that say so. It has a Martin sticker inside the
body at the base of the neck but it just says Martin Custom, made in USA,
etc. no model number. Any ideas? Is it a D-15?

Thanks,
Bob

If it is truley a Martin it will have the model # and the SN burned (no
sticker) into the wood at the base of the neck on the inside of the
guitar. You will need to look inside the sound hole and may need a
flashlight.

It has the this burn in but it says "Custom" and the serial #.
Does Martin make a "Custom"?

They do make Custom guitars. I toured the factory once and there is a
small section that does all of the custom work.

If you pay them enough $ they will make what ever you want.

Did you compare it to a bone stock D-15? Wood, finish, binding, trim,
tuners ect?

I have no idea how a custom guitar is labeled. I'd suggest you contact
Martin with the SN. They could tell everything about it.

Let me know how it turns out.

Good Luck.

It looks exactly like a stock D-15 with the same markings on the frets,
woods, etc. I tried to e-mail Martin and asked them with the SN, but have
not heard back yet. Maybe I'll get a chance to call over Christmas. I have
no doubt that it's a Martin; just can't prove which model.

Martin keeps meticulious records on all of their instruments. My guess
is it CYA for their warranty info.

They will be able to tell you who touched it and when as it went thru
the factory. Probably the lot numbers of the woods which were used.

Your email is probably caught in the christmas down time. The plant
may be shut down for the holidays.

Dont give up...

Hey,
I heard from Martin this week and they verified that it is a custom which
was made for musicians friends and it is identical to the d-15.

Hey Bob,

The next question would be... If it is a D-15 what is the customized
feature?
Was it a special (custom) production run just for Musicians Friend Co.
?
I didnt know that Martin would do something like that. One custom
instrument is one thing but a whole run for MF Co... Hmmmm

Bottomline... it doesnt matter. How do you like playing it? Does it
play and sound like a Martin?

Yeah, they are made just for Musicians Friends. Sounds and plays great. I
may have my brother lower the action a hair but other than that, it's
awesome.

The next thing on the customize list would be to install a bone nut and
saddle. I would wait a year for the guitar to "settle in" first. Cost
~$100- and will make it louder and a bit brighter.

That is all I've done to my HD-28. It is a cannon.

Martin manufactures and distributes a specific Musician's Friend D-15
model. If you bought a D-15 from them, then you actually bought the
Musician's Friend model and not the D-15 you're familiar with.

Check the insiade neck block. You'll have to look in the sound hole and
up towards the neck. It should say D-15 and have a serial number. If
it's a Musician's Friend D-15, it will probably say Custom with the
serial number.
