Hi.
My name is Dudley Henriques. I was active as a folk guitarist in
Philadelphia in the sixties and owned and played a D28.
Several years ago I had a spinal operation that left my left hand in
pretty bad shape for finger picking. When I realized I could no longer
play things like Mole's Moan I kind of gave up and sold the Martin.
Now I'm thinking of buying a new D28 and giving it another try.
Question is this.
On my old D28 I lowered the action down to just short of a buzz as my
picking style was soft rather than sharp. I'd like the new D28 to have
this same low action. Martin says they will do it for me for nothing
when I order the guitar.
I've checked local dealers and have a price of $2149 for the Standard
D28 with hard shell case. (They said they would throw in a capo for me :-)
I'm a bit concerned about buying the instrument without feeling the
action but I realize that's impossible.
Anyone here ever lowered the action on their Martin and am I ok letting
Martin do this for me?

Get the right guy to do it! I have called in before to have this type
of work done. You might even want to call in to the custom shop just so
they can MAKE SURE it gets done. This is the route I took. Seriously,
call in again and ask SPECIFICALLY for Danny Brown and tell him that you
want Chris Eckhart to work on your D28. This will save you a lot of
headaches. As a matter of fact, jot these names down for further
reference as well... Fred Greene, Bob Fehr, Ed Golden, and Danny Brown.
They are the custom shop Supervisors and they will be glad to help you
out.

Happy playing to you.
