My D-18 was showing some wear. After taking it to the factory, I was
told all the struts were loose and the neck needed a reset. They also
reglued the bridge. They said they kept the original bridge because it
was Brazilian rosewood. All I had to pay for was the fret job. After
they were done (it took 6 months) it sounded like new...but
fortunately after a few weeks, it sounded old again.
It was so nice, I was no longer satisfied with my Alvarez for shows,
but I didn't want to subject it to more wear and tear, so two weeks
ago I bought a DCX1E. I know, it's a Mexican Martin with no
appointments and it has high quality formica for back and sides...but
wow...it sounds fantastic...almost as sweet as the old D-18 and it has
much fuller bass and mids.
Yesterday, I went back to the store and they had another that sounded
just like it...and a Tawny Satin that had the nicest tightest grained
spruce I've ever seen and sounded incredible.
I still hope to get a solid rosewood model eventually, (like the D 28
I used to have) but these new X models seem to have it all.
