My band wants to cover van Halen's Poundcake and I need to buy an
affordable drill to get the same whine through the pick-up. Seems my
little black and decker rechargeable doesn't have enough RPM's for tonal
take-off.
Any suggestions of a make/model chordless drill? The cheaper the better
to do the job. Thanks. mark D

If you want the good sound, you need a vintage tube drill. Don't get
suckered into getting one of those modelling drills.

I can get this sound. He used a Black & Decker. Not sure which one.

Any drill will mostly work, except for high end ones.. What you want is
a drill that you pull the trigger and let off, the chuck gradually slows
down.. Some High end drills ( Like my Ryobi and Makita's ) come to an
abrupt stop. A craftsman I have from my dad's estate works just fine.
Just need some delay and chorus, you are there..

I know the drill's cool, but if your band and singer are
good enough to do the song well, I don't think anyone's
gonna miss the drill.

Makita 18v, but with the portable rechargeable Variac he can get the
drill to 'brown down' to where the servo motors are seeing 12 to 16v -
also his has a Plexi casing. Really though, it's not so much about the
drill, dude - he's Van Halen! He could make any drill sound like magic!
It's in the fingers man...

I think it's all about the babe who's using the drill in the video. Get
a woman who looks like that to play drill for you, and nobody will care
what it sounds like.

You're right, but what a great visual! Pulling out a drill for the
beginning of a song will definitely get some additional attention (hey
- it's rock and roll!). If you really want to make the crowd's jaws
drop, play "Ted Just Admit It" by Jane's Addition - Navarro uses a
vibrator for a similar effect as the drill.

No way Poundcake without the drill!? My band plays alot of VH mostly
earlier stuff with Roth.
I've got the rhythm and all the harmonics down, and 50% thru the lead.
If we can't play it close to the original, we don't cover it.
Yep, I need a variable speed drill with high RPM's. Not an option to
blow off the drill.....shame on all who suggested that.

Bob Bradshaw is coming out with a box that replicates both EVH and Paul
Gilberts drill sound.
