Hi,
anyone knowing what kind of effect Steve Stevens (Billy Idol, Atomic
Playboys, etc) is using to achieve his odd "pinball" guitar fx ? (fx is
actually a bit difficult to describe but I assume some of you will know)
cheers.

I need a better description of the "pinball" effect. I was able to do
his machine gun effect a few nights ago. Using a reverse delay (Line6
DL-4), set the delay time kinda short, and whack the strings to the
delay time tempo. QED.

It can be heard for instance on Vince Neil "Exposed" album, 1st song
("Look in your eyes"), 2nd guitar solo, from 3'40 to 3'55. It's really
weird - not sure it's even a guitar ;-)

I've heard that album once. I don't care for Vince but recall being
blown away by Stevens. I wish I could help, but I'm not familiar with
this "noise".

I'm not familiar with the songs you mentioned, but I beleive a lot of
Steve's signature sound is from an old ADA Flanger set really fast for the
machine gun type stuff

It could be a (tape) Echoplex.
Back in the 70's, guitarist Tommy Bolin played with drummer Billy Cobham on
an album called 'Spectrum'.
Tommy manipulated the slider bar on his Echoplex to achieve some great
'pinball' sounds on a tune called 'Quadrant 4'.
(I saw him do it live when he was in the James Gang. The Echoplex sat on a
stool, waist-high.)

I recall Steve Stevens mentioning in an interview Tommy's clever use of this
device.

...................it could be what Steve's doing.

I saw the James Gang Tour for the album "Bang" with Tommy Bolin on guitar.
I`ve never seen anyone with an Echoplex on a stool, and lordy he played that
effect like I`ve never heard elsewhere. If you listen to "Standing In The
Rain" from the James Gang "Bang" album, you`ll get a bit of an idea.

See ya,
John

I believe this is right. I recall the same thing. Believe I read it in a Guitar World or GP
interview w/ Stevens.

The "ray gun" noises on "Rebel Yell" were supposedly the product of Stevens
running his guitar into a Lexicon PCM42 digital delay, using its modulation
circuit to shift the pitch of the delayed signal.

As someone else posted, that's the Lexicon delay unit.

For echoplex effects check out Billy Idol's Whiplash Smile. Steve Stevens
did a bunch of echoplex stuff on that record.

BTW, the new Billy Idol record has some great stuff on it. Check out the
tune Body Snatchers.

I've listen to both "Rebel Yell" and the James Gang's song and the
"pinball" effect I have in mind seems closer "Rebel Yell" (position
2'41"). Thanks all for the hint. I'll search for more info on the
Echoplex. I believe the parameters will also be key.

If you all have the opportunity to listen to the song I mentionned 3
days ago, you'll know what I meant (i.e Vince Neil's album; Should have
been better as a S.Stevens album with a different singer but that's the
way...;-)

Have any of you ever tried to use an electronic toy (they might be called
mini-attacker orso, making laser gun sounds and dive-bombs and such) right
in the magnetic field of your pick-up? Yes. It does exactly make the "rebel
yell" sound! A 1$ toy, not an echoplex.

Have fun.

I used to make loops with my Boomerang and use my kids toys as noise
makers along with the guitar stuff I played..

Also Steve Stevens had a black Hamer SS that they installed the insides
of a Japanese ray gun in, and he could hit the buttons on the guitar and
make some ray gun noises too..

Outt..
Jeff.
