Hi, I posted this before but my PC went down so i couldn't get any replys.
I've got a Boss GT-5 and although it sounds great when i play at a band
practice and i have to turn the volume up the whole thing just screaches
with feedback and the most horrible noises ever. I do play with a high gain
set-up but even on clean settings it goes wild. The actual pedal is fine
and nothing wrong with it but it's driving me insane. I dont really want to
change the sounds on it too much as i'm crap with programming my own sounds.
Any help will be appreciated. Also any patches or sites were i can find some
would be good too.

Thanks

Dan

Dan,

I have a GT-3, and they are pretty similar. I've found that if I
build a patch at bedroom volume, that it is entirely too bright at
gigging volume and I got tons of feedback. Making your patches sound
'big' at low volume makes them way over the top when playing at full
volume.

One thing you can do is turn off all compression when playing live.
You get so much more sustain at high volumes from the amp feeding
back, that you don't need as much compression....if any. I rarely use
compression when I play live. Also, if the GT-5 has a global EQ like
the GT-3, then boost the lows and cut the highs. You probably are
running a bit too bright, and that makes the feeback even worse.
Also, on your distortion patches, cut back the distortion as much as
you can while maintaining the crunch you are looking for. If you have
too much gain on your distortion patches, they become uncontrollable
at high volume.

The best thing to do is find a place where you can try out patches at
different volumes, and also be sure to tweak the bass, mid and treble
controls on the amp to tone things down too.

Hope that helps. If you spend time learning the Gt-5, you will be
rewarded. The pre-amp modeling and effects are very good for the
money.

First make sure you are not running the Boss into your guitar
amps preamp (where you plug your guitar in). I believe they
instruct you to run it into ;effects return' or 'power amp in'.

If you have it patched in correctly and are getting unwanted
squeally feedback, I think you're gonna have to go in there and
adjust some things Dan. I know that's not what you wanna hear
but it's probably gonna have to be done. There's a bit of a
learning curve on the Boss type stuff. but once you get it it's
pretty easy.

The things you (probably) need to look at are compression and
noise gates (maybe called NR in their software). Possibly Drive
and EQ although I believe the those can be adjusted in a broad
sense from the main controls.

I have a Line 6 AX2 and the hi-gain models sound great when I
play em at home/bedroom volume. I've cranked it up to band
practice volume before and got squeals, especially from
Fender/single coil style guitars.

I looked at what the presets were doing and noticed there was
some compression usually on...so I backed that down. I also
noticed Line 6 has it's noise gates set at close to maximum on
the high gain models. Make sure your Boss has NR activated in
the preset and set it as high as you can without it cutting off
your notes. It's your call on the amount of drive you want or
need but this may cause feedback...

Finally, you can get into the quasi parametric EQ section of
your Boss's programming and really zero in on the frequencies
that are causing feed back. Just pulling one or two freqs back a
little can really help.

If you use more than one guitar, you may need to do these
adjustments for each guitar-as what sounds good with one ax may
not with another, or not be necessary with another. Save each
new 'adjusted' preset. There's plenty of storage slots.

It's sorta the price you pay for the technology and flexibility.
You should actually be glad that you have a modeler with a lot
of adjustment capability, some of the simpler ones don't.

If tweaking is completely not your thing, you should consider a
different type of rig-although this type of tweaking isn't all
that difficult. Just do it in a place where you can really crank
it up and make it feed back-then adjust.

Good Luck

Steve

You may already have tried this, but did you select the right amp position
under Utility?
If you use a second preamp plus poweramp, you should select one of the two
"guitar amp" positions. If you only use a power amp, you should select one
of the two "power amp" positions.
Henry.
