Hello,
I've just bought a used GR-1 with a GK-2, basically to see if I like
guitar-synths before buying a more "state-of-the-art" system. The guy I
bought it from assures me that the unit is in good shape, however I have the
following problem:

Everything is plugged correctly. If I push the S1 and S2 buttons on the GK-2
the GR-1 responds as it is supposed to (the light on the GK-2 burns). If I
put the GK-2 switch on guitar or mix I do hear the clean guitar sound. But
if I turn the switch to synth (on the GK-2) nothing happens. I don't hear
anything and I don't see any activity on the GR-1 display. Neither when I'm
in regular play mode or when I'm tuning or adjusting sensitivity. I've tried
all the options as mentioned in the troubleshooting part of the manual. I've
also done a full reset of the GR-1 but still nothing. I would really
appreciate help.

Thanks for the help,
Jelmer

D you have the pickup mounted correctly on the guitar?
If so, then unless something is not plugged in correctly or set correctly on
the GR-1 I'd say you got ripped off.

Or maybe it's the GK-2 cable! They are not of the best durabillity.

Thanks for the replies.
I found the problem. I had mounted the pickup on the body of the guitar just
next to the bridge, but apparently it has to be closer to the strings. I
moved the pickup around a bit and am getting the best results when the
pickup is about 1mm beneath the strings. So everything works fine now, but
is the pickup supposed to be this close to the strings? It's a bit in the
way when I'm playing.
I'm using a GK-2 now, but is a GK-2A more sensitive, ie. can I place it
lower?

Thanks,
Jelmer

I own a Roland VG-88 system with GK/2A pickup. I'm not sure I know what gear
you are interfacing to but I think there may be some driver settings to be
adjusted from within the unit you are using to adjust the signal strength of
each one of the yolks on the pickup. The proper distance for the pickup from
the bridge is no more than 20mm and the height I will have to get back to
you on as the GK comes with a gap gauge and I'm at work right now and can't
get to it.
Hope this was some kinda help,
Ed

Thanks Ed. I would really apreciate it if you could take the time to measure
the distance between your GK-2A and the strings. I've maxed the sensitivty
on the GR-1 (which is the great-great-great-grandfather of your VG-88 ;-)
but it looks like I can't move the pickup lower. Like I said, I'm using a
GK-2 but I might have to order the GK-2A. Apparently the electronics of both
are the same, but the latter has a different pickup. Maybe also a higher
sensitivity which is why I'd like to hear about the height of the pickup in
your setup.

Thanks again,
Jelmer

OK! Here goes,
"The optimum distance between the pickup and each string is about 1.0mm
when the highest notes on the neck are fingered."

And there you have it, 8)

Yes, the pickup has to be very close to the strings to get the best response.
I just went with a Brian Moore i8.13 because the whole pickup unit was in my
way. I really like having it built into the guitar and the RMC piezo system
tracks better and gives me an acoustic sound.
