I've never had any effects, just bought boss gt-6, and have never posted
anything to a newsgroup. Questions:
Is there an esay way to find out how your favorite artist creates the
guitar sound on your favorite song? Example: Jerry Garcia on the song
Estimated Prophet, of Eric Clapton on Badge? Is there a website. Are
there books? If you don't know what effects can make what sounds...is
there a good place to start?
Is there an easy way to search this newsgroup for gt-6 info, or do you
just have to look thru all of the SUBJECT lines on all of the postings.
All advise, and your patience with the newbie, is appreciated.
BK
Don't know about the stuff you mentioned first, but to find info from this
group on the gt-6, go to http://www.google.com/advanced_group_search?hl=en
and enter what you want to search for (e.g. gt-6) and what group you want to
search in (e.g. alt.guitar.effects)

Well, here's a quick and dirty attempt to describe some common effects. The
topic could fill a book or two or twenty, so don't take it as the end-all.
These are very general, and as you've never used effects before I won't
explain electronically what's happening since you mostly want to know how it
sounds.
CHORUS: emulates more than one guitar playing the same part, by simulating
the small differences in tuning, timing and intonation that would naturally
occur if there were actually more than one. Usually used for a fuller,
thicker, or shimmery sound. Play with the rate and depth adjustments to see
what they change.
DELAY: generates an echo. You can adjust how quickly or slowly, and how many
repeats. Some allow you to adjust whether the echoes degrade more and more
over time.
FLANGER: can sound like chorus, but at some settings sounds more watery or
swirly, at others like a jet whoosh. The drums on "Kashmir" by Zeppelin are
flanged, you can hear it most on the cymbal hits and drum rolls. Keep in
mind that's just one setting too. Play again with rate and depth.
PHASER: also works somewhat like chorus and flanger, but more like a
"wow-wow-wow" than swirly or whooshy. Again, rate and depth.
COMPRESSOR: this is often more subtle than the others. Basically, it takes
the loudest part of your guitar signal (usually the note attack) and the
quietest (usually the tailing end of a decaying note) and makes the
difference in loudness between the two smaller. It will make your sound a
bit less aggressive, since the initial attack is brought down some, but you
also get more sustain, as the decaying note stays louder longer. It can a;sp
even out playing that is too inconsistent in volume from one note to the
next, for example, but it's no miracle cure. It's often used in front of
distortion, but it on a clean sound it can add some fatness.
These are just some basics to start with. Why don't you just try turning
only one of them on at a time to hear what they really do? After your ear
gets used to their characteristic sounds, you'll recognize them more and
more on your favorite records.
Hope this helps,
Arch
I saw one post that laid out a patch for a specific songs and was
wondering if that kind of sharing was common. Haven't found anymore
yet. You help is greatly appreciated. Good night.
they have user groups for all kinds of stuff.. amps/effects etc.. in effects
groups users share their patches and maybe someone might have a patch you
like.
just do a search on gt-6 and you may find some user groups..

Does anyone know if you can run a music source throught the GT-6 and
play along with song? I miss this feature offered by the Korg
product. Might have to keep my PX-4.
