Ok. Here is the question. Does the Reissue of the Electro-Harmonix
Small Stone sound exactly like (or close enough), to the original
vintage Small Stone pedal? I have heard both before, but thru different
amps and different guitars. I have not yet did a side by side test ( I
will soon). I have also noticed (along with every other pedal that I
have), that it sounds different depending on if it is place in the
effects loop on not (but that is a totally different post). Anybody
have any opinions (which aren't generalizations) who have actually tried
both? How do the other EH pedals compare to the originals?

There were a couple of variants of the original Small Stone. The reissue isn't
bad, but it doesn't, IMHO, at least, quite get there, at least not compared to
my original EH4800. I'm not sure, however, which Small Stone variant the RI is
based on.

The US-made reissue E-H pedals are very close, if not identical, to the
originals. I've A/B'd my Small Clones and can't tell them apart, for example.

The Russian-made reissues tend to be a little bit less accurate, but they're
not bad, and in most cases I suspect the differences are small enough not to
matter.

The present reissue is quite close to the original Small Stone in both
circuitry and sound. Among both the old and reissue Small Stones
however, some small degree of unit-to-unit variation in sound can be
expected, due to component tolerances and other manufacturing
variables. The Small Stone can be modded for direct bypass, and for a
less extreme effect in the color-on mode.

EH reissues generally look the same but sound at least as good, and in
some cases much better than the originals. The Polychorus reissue in
particular is an all new design, superior in every respect to the
original Polychorus, Echoflanger, and Polyflanger - which were the
same pedal going by different names.

I've done side by side w/ the re-issue against both the Orange/black label
Small Stone
and the Red/black label Small Stone.
I feel the re-issue has a few stronger points structurally but
The EH orange/black S.S. has a richer effect, and a faster speed rate than
my EH red/black small stone. 'course the red/black looks like it was used as
a tire chalk at L.A.X.... so it might just be tired out.
I've even found that there is even a difference in sound between the
reissues. The older army green cast metal based reissues sound better than
the others IMHO..
its even so with my big muff reissue but thats another thread..
I love old EH stuff, though I think over time, cap and resistor values drift
so
its kinda hit and miss. The new EH stuff is affordable and a blast to tweak
w/ if you are that type.... (the small clone rules)

In the year 2000 all that is old can become new again. And a new Small Stone is
$74.95. Why pay more. If you gotta have Vintage remember the extra cash you
spend could have bought you a better Phaser. So try more new ones and you find
the one that's best for you.

You could also buy a worse one for more than that too, ie: Boss. I've never
heard another phaser new or old that I like as much as the Small Stone, simple
as that. I paid top dollar for mine, $65, back in '93. I wish I'd gotten that
$55 Small Clone at the same time. The US Small Stone reissues are supposed to
be out sometime soon btw.

I've played every issue small stone. The first issue is the best to my years.
It's
sounds extreme and subtle in all the necessary areas. The reissues are not
bad,but if you wanna do it right, get the real thing. HINT: Ilove small stone's
and phasing in general but, there's one BIG
problem. The inherent function of the effect
causes a dropoff in signal when it's on.

Are the U.S. ones supposed to be of higher quality or something?
