personally nothing emulates an actual tube driven spring reverb
except a tube driven spring reverb.
however, that doesn't mean that there are not nice reverb abd delay
pedals out there that can't effect a good reverb type sound.
the best option would be to get an external tank reverb unit
(fender used to make them and some other makers out there
still make actual external spring tank reverb units).
or try out popular pedals like the Holy Grail etc...
if your ears are used to hearing actual fender long tank reverb
then no pedal is going to quite sound the same as that.
But if get used to the pedal ways of reverb and/or delay then
the effects the pedals produce can certainly cut it for live gigging.
Having tried a few Boss digital pedals, I advise against getting one without
trying. I haven't liked any of the ones I tried.
I tried a Holy Grail, and thought it was very good, but I was looking for
more than a one-trick pony, as both my amps have a good spring reverb. In
multiFX pedals I tend to prefer plate or room effects.

I have the holy grail pedal, it does a pretty decent job of mimicking
the real thing, but it's not the real thing.
Hi!
Take a look at the line 6 verbzilla!

I like delay over reverb when it comes to rock/blues ...
Nuthing beats a real Fender 'verb though.
Second. There's only one way to get that jaw dropping Fender-verb, and
that's with the real thing.
I use delay over reverb now, even with my 112 which has a tank in it.
It's just less muddy sounding.

It's also hard to get reverb to sound good in front of an
amp..especially with any distortion..
So... the whole game changes if one has a loop, and the ability to put a
pedal in the loop..
MANY years ago - I had this rack unit from DOD that was a Spring
Reverb... An actual Spring reverb in a 1U rack... I LOVED that thing!
One day I'll find it again! :)
But, I've had the Digitech XP400 - Great reverb with some nice reverse
ones...
From Boss - I had an old RV-2?? had delays and reverbs... And of course,
one of the ones from Electro Harmonix (the first one)
I'm going to state again.. going through the front-end of an amp will
never be optimal - there's too much gain-staging... if you don't have an
amp with a loop...Maybe it's time to get an amp with a loop - or
reverb...

I'm surprised no one has mentioned this month's Guitar Player mag.
They do a shoot-out between the Boss FRV-1 and a Lee Jackson "Mr.
Springy" pedal. The FRV-1 wins. Overall, they say it captures the vibe
of a tube-driven spring reverb, but can sound a little harsh if the
tone knob is cranked. (Who cranks the tone on a reverb anyway?)
IMHO, reverb is one of the FX that digital technology does really
well. I have spring reverbs in 3 different amps, but wind up using
digital 'verb most of the time. Not only does it sound good, but it
doesn't rattle when my bass player turns up.
- Rich
Here is a youtube link of one being put through its paces:
My wife gave me one for my birthday and I'm using it in a
stereo rig. I'm really liking the plate reverb setting...
If you're into the surf thing, a real tube driven spring reverb is the
only thing that sounds right. IMHO...
-KK
Can you go into a bit more detail? My amp has an effect loop, but I've never
bothered to use it. What do you mean "too much gain-staging"?

I TOTALLY agree with you... and add my love for Digital Delay as well..
When I sold my Boss DM-2 for $35 a few years ago, I thought I was
ripping the guy off :)
But yeah... I still use the F out of my Quadraverb...

The power a guitar pickup puts out is miniscule.. It's really just a
magnet. The amount of amplification it takes to get it to be (for
example) 50 watts, is staggering.. As a result, everything gets
amplified. If you have a cracking cable... It gets amplified..noisy
pedal.. amplified... etc.
So.. with reverb, it never sounds good when it's in front of all the
gain needed to get loud (IMO) - it brings out the imperfections..
If you have a loop... change your world and start putting things like
chorus/phase/delay/Flanger - and reverb in that loop... It will change
your perspective on EVERYTHING...
Pedals that sounded like crap - will probably KILL. And I'd only do it
with 'time-based' pedals - no distortions or compressors or wahs. I'm
not saying it can't be done, but, loops put pedals in a certain place in
the gain-stage chain that benefit those ones I mentioned above..
...yeah...what Chris said...

Except maybe for phasers. I still think they sound better before the
amp. They can sound kinda brittle in the loop.
- Rich
...I'll give you that - not brittle really, but subdued...might depend
somewhat on the amp being used, though. I'm running my Moog phaser
through the front end of my stereo rig, but I did it so I'd get the
effect out of both sides instead of just one.
And I'll add that I'm beginning to think the same about my Mini Deja
Vibe - I think it could sound a bit more pronounced if I run it through
the front. Again, I put it in the loop on one side because I only
wanted the effect out of that side.

Could be... I'm still looking for a great phaser.. My Small Stone is
starting to not be so great :)
Depending on what you're looking for (and your budget), check out the
Moog one sometime...after I heard one I had to get one. What I like
about it is that you can still hear your guitar through it - even if you
dial it on heavy. Keep on Foogin'!
I also like the Red Witch one -

...I like their chorus too.

My thing with Phase shifters is all psychological :) I grew up with
'Lou Reed - Rock and Roll Animal' and 'Judas Priest - Hell Bent for
Leather'... Those two albums had the BEST phase shifter sounds to me..
I assumed they were Small Stones... Years later, interviews confirmed
that both guitarists (Steve Hunter and Glen Tipton) had MXR Phase 100's
- which I had, but thought was crap...
So.... I like the Small Stone, but, it's such a tone-sucker, I'm
starting to not like it..
There's a guy at work with a Mutron Phaser II that he's trying to sell -
but that thing is like a small suitcase :)
Thanks for the tips..

That does sound good... But I'd go NUTS with those reverse knobs...Who
designed that thing??
Yeah...ain't those fine? Red Witch pedals are out of New Zealand, I
think. You can find them on Amazon if your local doesn't carry 'em.
Definitely on my GAS list for 2010.

...reminds me - my ex-roommate has a Mutron III envelope filter I'd like
to talk him out of...

The Phase 100 always sounded too much like Jerry Garcia to me. Hard to
believe Tipton used one.

I think the Nano version that's out now has true bypass.
I also like my MXR Commande Serie Phaser. It's sounds an awful lot
like a vintage Phase 90, but with adjustable depth. The only thing is,
I've had 2 of these pedals, and the first one made a loud thump when
switched. The one I have now doesn't.
- Rich
I used to have the Little Lanilei pedal, which is an actual short spring reverb
in a pedal. It was nice as long as you don't want surf-verb!
Kevin
I'm late to this discussion. I admit it. TheChris stated something
that I had been kicking-around inside my tiny pea brain for a while.
I lost interest in reverb units once I got a vintage Fender Twin
Reverb back in the mid-90's. The rest just never sounded "right." As
such, I pretty much abandoned using reverb for live stuff. It occurred
to me over the last day or two that the reason I never liked pre-amp
reverbs is because my favorite reverb happens AFTER the preamp stage.
Consarn it, now I think I'm gonna have to play around with my one amp
that has an effects-loop. It has a decent reverb in it already.
Also, let me add a +1 nod to the Quadraverb reverb for a guitar rig.
Yeah, it's a rack unit. Yeah, it's old. Yeah, I sold mine. Yeah, I'm
looking to buy one again.

Those Commande Series pedals were built SO cheaply.. Thank your lucky
stars that it still works :)
Thankfully, I've barely heard Garcia :) but, I know he had one because I
bought one for a friend who was recreating period pedalboards from
Garcia... For some reason, he took my Boss Heavy Metal pedal as well :)
It didn't hurt Eddie Van Halens perfect sound :) But, I just never got
into the PHase 90...
Now, THAT sounds like Jerry Garcia! :)

I have an original Mutron and a Maestro Stage Phaser. One of the dials
Says "Balls"
Damn, off the wall spurt of lunacy that could rival Zappa.
This is what mine is:

My bro had a quadraverb I used to borrow a lot..it had a deep tone about it
that sounded like it was analogue..still..fender spring reverbs are the
best.. amen.
