What chip did the original TS808 use, the RC4558 or the JRC4558?

Wich chip sounds better?

There is a good deal of hype behind that. Mr bat ears will swear that
there is a difference between the two... The "J" prefix only means
Japan if I am not mistaken. That is the only difference.

Try to use a socket so you can swap out IC's.

Personally, my 808 mod screamer has been on the shelf in favor for a
couple cascaded AMZ boosters.

Which chip sounds better?<

See my tube screamer page for that answer and much much more.

The LM833, 4559, or OPA2604...but only if you bring the
rest of the circuit up to snuff.

If you'd like to try both for not much $$, please pay a visit:

I have the JRC4558D by Japan Radio Corp. as well as the Texas Instruments RC4558.

Steve, what's your opinion on the differences between the two? Did Motorola make a 4558? I thought my Chandler had
Mot 4558's in it, and I often wondered if it would be worth the hassle of swapping to JRC's. My instinct tells me it
would not, because of the PCB mounted controls (Lots of jacks, pots -- this is rackmount).

Both. But primarily the JRC4558D, made by NJR. The RC4558 was made in
Malaysia by TI.

> Wich chip sounds better?

Neither. They sound very similar; there are some slight differences
in tone that you may find significant. Many people have a slight
preference for the RC4558 -- although as Daniel Haney points out
elsewhere in this thread, many others find better op-amps that do
better in modified versions of the circuit.

I've been doing comparisons lately since I have NOS RC's from years ago to
the JRC chip. I do prefer the Malaysian chip for some reason over the
NJR... Both sound excellent, and Stanley is right on the others. In the
next few weeks I plan to experiment a little more with each including some
other 8 pin variants that I bought from an old tech that had walls of stuff
and NOS tubes. I stripped a board and used CC resisters and changed the out
put buffer, IE as AM.

The JRC seemed to have a tad bit more highend bite to it with more gain, but
the RC had more of a rounded tone to it with a smooter to muddy lows... IMHO
as always since we are all different players and hear qualities adherent to
our own spectrum!

I tested a RC4558N from probably mid 80's, is there much didderence
with an RC4558P? When I Compared the RC4558N to an OLD JRC4558D I
found out that the RC4558N sounded a little darker, a tiny more bass i
have not decided wich one I liked more, since the RC4558N is not an
original part of the TS808 I will go for the JRC4558D, but maybe I
change my mind. :-)

I've never tried the N, just the P, couldn't tell you...

The P had more bass and a little less grainyness to it than the JRC. and
less gain... It wasn't darker thanthe JRC IMHO... I modded the pedal for
Monte Merciless who posts here on this group and he was really impressed
with it. BTW, the RC-4558P's I have are NOS from years ago, so they may
sound better (subjective view point) than the new ones being made... I
dunno.

I can't tell you, which sounds better, because my own TS clone uses a
JFET input op-amp. I like it, but you might not. I do know that I sell
a lot of 8-pin IC sockets to people who are obviously modding old TS
pedals to accept one of several chips.

I hate to have to use this news group for this, but my email server is down. The Carling switches you carry, are they the
DPDT?

difference in tone with the others ?
