"Slide guitar" is a style of playing, rather than a style of
instrument. any guitar can be turned into a "slide guitar" by the use
of an "extention nut". which fits over the stock nut, in order to
raise the action. the purpose of the extention nut is to keep the
frets from getting banged up. On the other hand, there are guitars
which are specifically made to be played in the slide style, such as
the Weisenborn, the Dobro, or the lap steel.

I play songs right, not wrong
As muso said, slide is a style, not a type of guitar so:
Spanish position or lap style?
Electric, resonator or flattop?
Tony D
I used to think that the term "rhythm guitar" referred to a type of
guitar, and I have run into a number of other folks who thought so
too.

Any crappy old guitar with high action will do.
My sister Sheena had a crappy old Yamaha with horrible action. Then she
cut part of one of her fingers off on a table saw, so she decided to
quite guitar. She gave the old Yamaha to me. I started to use it for slide.
I made up the following little thing using the crappy old Yamaha for
slide and called it Sheena's Axe. (You know, it was her axe, and she
chopped off her finger...)
First I met you online was when I got my Eastwood electric dobro.
You still playing dobro?
Mine is loaned out.
Pt
Which hand did she cut her finger off on? And is she right or left handed?

Jim
All those who believe in psychokinesis raise my hand.
Left. Right handed. And she wasn't that into playing the thing anyway.
Still awful anyway. I quit my internet business because I was too afraid of
cutting my hands. I hope she's getting along alright.
Jim
Strictly speaking, I haven't played dobro for a long time, from the days
when it was hard to find decent nationals (biscuit cone) in the UK and Oz.
Yeah, I still play reso, and I'm tending to favour the Nat Res Estralita for
acoustic slide and the tricone for standard fingerstyle. Both are
electrified with magnetic pickups that fit in well with the rest of the bad,
and the tricone, a nickel-plated Beltona cutaway, looks really flashy
onstage. I've been playing electric slide for a while, and I'm branching out
into standard tuning for both acoustic and electric. This latest development
accounts for my interest in modes and the like - I've never played
electric-style leads before.
I've just been listening to Ry Cooder and Taj Mahal doing "Statesboro
blues". RC is a master of tone, and the style and sound are pretty much
Duane Allman, but the instrumental break is pure Elmore James, lifted from
"Dust my broom".

Playing slide can be a good way of rescuing a nice acoustic guitar that has
got unplayable conventionally, and bargains can sometimes be had this way.
However, I think it is misleading to imply that slide sounds OK no matter
what you playing on. In fact, I have found it much more difficult to find
acoustics that sound good for slide than it is for conventional playing -
many lack sustain and complexity in the high registers. I've had a fair
collection of passable flattops (4 Martins, 3 Gibsons), and the only one
that I think sounds positively good for slide is the Bourgeois MS Sig, with
the Maton coming in as acceptable.
Tony D
Glass slide, Bronze strings.
Jim
Oh, 100% all right. It was just the tip of her finger, and it was ages ago.
Tony can you explain to me what flattop refers to?
Thanks.
A flattop is yer common or garden guitar with a flat top and a round
soundhole. The major types of guitars are flattops, archtops and
resonators..
Jim, I think a lot of guitars will make a decent job of the fast punchy kind
of prewar blues style slide. However if you go the some of Ry Cooder's
stuff, like "Vigilante Man" or "Dark was the night', or folksy things like
"Creole Belle" or "Long dark veil", IMO it demands a lot more of the guitar
in the way of sustain and complexity in the high registers.
Tony D
Sean, that's a very cool arrangement. Do you have a pup in Sheena's
axe or just miced?
tony
I use my std Strat with med action that I use for everything electric.
It just takes a lil practice and a LIGHT touch, Thick glass slide -
just barely touching the strings . I usually like it with mucho reverb
and distortion .
Example: ( I play all wife sings ) "while my guitar gently weeps "

I just listened to it, and I thought it sounded good. <g> Maybe I'm just
overly picky. How does it sound in the high registers, around the 15th and
17th frets?
Tony D
I put one of those sound hole pick ups in the guitar. I think it was a
Dean Markely. I haven't used it in ages so I forget.
Well, since it's just a regular old Yamaha acoustic, it would be pretty
uncomfortable trying to play up around the 17th fret. But I am playing
it as high as the 12th fret on that cut.
Thanks for listening Derek. And thanks to anyone else who listened. My
sister Sheena was pretty pleased with it. I "gave" her the tune for her
birthday.
