Ha! Way too many greedy MBAs around for that to happen.
Paul P
What revolution? The other day I drove into a gas station with 18 bays and
had to wait because everyone was filling up. The real revolution begins at
the ballot box and even that wont work sometimes.
Wish you were a little closer to Texas PT. I could use a small break in
the prices around here.
Dwight
>Ha! Way too many greedy MBAs around for that to happen.
Funny, I see/hear this sort of thing often. Is greed somehow limited
to the highly educated?
I wasn't referring to greedy people who happen to have MBAs. I was
referring to MBAs, one of the most despicable segments of humanity,
those who have chosen to make a career out of being greedy.
Paul P
Those two prices you mention will go back up. Prices in other commodities
will also continue to rise. People will continue to grumble and pay. But
they won't revolt. During the Great Depression our economy was much worse
than now. But there was still no revolution. People continued to grumble
and pay. If they couldn't pay, they made it as best as they could or became
destitute. Even then we didn't enter the war (WWII) to revolt against our
poverty. As a matter of fact, our country remained neutral until Japan
attacked Pearl Harbor. After the war destroyed industry and farming in
other countries, we began to experience an upswing in our economy as a
result. Now, as other countries become more industrialized and their
economies thrive...we suffer again. Because other countries are becoming
more modernized, there is a greater demand for gas than ever before. Prices
will most likely continue to rise. So you better go and get that guitar
before you really can't afford it.
If I hire someone to run my business, I want an MBA,

Just the highly educated greedy ones.
Because they were kept at the bottom of the J curve. Eventually there would
of been a revolt. We had a war to pull us out.

Ya, and biz people that do a little VB or VBA in Excel think
that they are now programmers. I.T. developers get no respect
any more. People used to think we went around in lab coats
carrying magnetic tapes, heavy disk packs and decks of
punched cards, while monitoring blinking lights :)
Now everything is dumbed down to a power-on LED and a
disk activity LED. Biz now thinks they can tell us how to
engineer software systems too. Don't get me started..

I don't think it's possible to live by the Golden Rule

Revolt was not a certain, foregone conclusion. It was merely a possibility.
We stayed at the bottom of that "J curve" from 1929 to 1941. That's a long
time. People won't revolt until they have lost just about everything and
have nothing left to lose. Even then, most will still suffer and grumble.
Just like people today will grumble about rising gas prices as they continue
to pay them.
Yes we were at the bottom but we recovered and were even more prosperous.
The J curve results when a country goes into economic bad times then
recovers slightly. Hence the J. The revolt occurs when the economic times
get better but don't fully recover. In other words "Why does everything suck
even though it's supposed to be better?"
Frustration results and revolution takes place because the people are not as
"beaten back" by the economic hard times as they were. Had they stayed at
the bottom the revolution wouldn't occur. That was the way my political
science teacher described it way back in the early 70's. Before the Iranian
Hostage crisis! I had a Iranian Trigonometry teacher that hated all
Americans.
That was my interpretation but don't get the revolution J curve confused
with the balance of trade or medical J curve. I'm sure other people
interpret it differently as it is a complicated subject with many variables.

But that is the crux of the problem. Nobody
wants to give up their cars, electricity and
running water (not to mention flushing toilets).
If you gave up your car, there'd be no gas problem.

No problem. I'll just borrow someone else's car.

Yes. White tux, huge sideburns.

These days, I work for a nonprofit educational foundation. We have a

In our world it's pretty difficult, if not impossible, to live one's
life in a way that does not depend on the exploitation of others. I'm
certainly as guilty as anyone but it seems to me that we should be
striving to eliminate it, not studying and applying better ways of
doing it.
I don't see a revolution happening any time soon. I was completely
astounded when I found out recently that the Bank of America is
a privately owned bank ! And the best thing that could happen for its
owners is a war since the US has to borrow money from it ! And if
anyone rises up they'll just turn off the taps, like they did last
century.
I'm with Charmed Snark, might as well go down laughing...

Oops, make that the Federal Reserve. Goes to show how much I know...
Paul P
More like a public-private partnership, if you look at it carefully:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_Reserve
The Federal Reserve System (also the Federal Reserve; informally The
Fed) is a private bank that serves as the central banking system of the
United States. Created in 1913 by the enactment of the Federal Reserve
Act, it is a quasi-public (government entity with private components)
banking system[1] composed of (1) the presidentially appointed Board of
Governors of the Federal Reserve System in Washington, D.C.; (2) the
Federal Open Market Committee; (3) 12 regional Federal Reserve Banks
located in major cities throughout the nation acting as fiscal agents
for the U.S. Treasury, each with its own nine-member board of directors;
(4) numerous private U.S. member banks, which subscribe to required
amounts of non-transferable stock in their regional Federal Reserve
Banks; and (5) various advisory councils.

happen. Too many Lumpies out there. :-)
A couple of years ago I put only 1,800 miles

I probably spent a lot of energy complaining

The Welk family was the wildest bunch of
partiers I've ever met. They could kick the
assess of any rock band when it comes to
getting wild.
From what I remember (don't remember much) there were some pretty hot
girls on that show...maybe dressed a bit conservatively....but hot!
...and probably wild behind the scenes too.

Four-ways with the Lennon Sisters. Ah, the possibilities!
There's a Station down near Tallong NSW called Ridaroo and they are
importing Red Kangaroos from out west, saddle breaking them and selling
them to Sydney commuters.
Only the boomers are used for transportation in and out of the city.
The smaller and highly agile flyers are preferred by inner city
couriers due to their ability to manuver through inner city traffic and
their extra storage compartment.
Yeah, Verizon is also canceling news groups!

For what it's worth, here's the e-mail I received from Verizon:
Dear Verizon Online Customer,
As a Verizon Newsgroup service user, we wanted to let you know about
some important changes that we will soon be making to our Newsgroup
service.
On June 24, 2008, we will be modifying our Newsgroup offerings to only
offer groups in the Big-8 Newsgroup hierarchies, which are listed below.
The 0.verizon.* newsgroup hierarchy will also continue to be available.
Users will not be able to post or download from any other newsgroups
using our Newsgroup service.
comp.*
humanities.*
misc.*
news.*
rec.*
sci.*
soc.*
talk.*
More details regarding the Big 8 newsgroup hierarchies is available at:
http://www.big-8.org/.
This change will not affect your Internet access service. If you would
like to subscribe to newsgroups other than those we offer, you will need
to subscribe to a separate commercial news service. Please note that
your use of any such service is still subject to our Terms of Service
and Acceptable Use Policy.
There are no changes required to your software, but you will need to
unsubscribe from all Newsgroups other than the Big 8 hierarchies and the
0.verizon.* hierarchy noted above. The following link explains how to
subscribe and unsubscribe in Outlook Express:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/171190
IMPORTANT: If you continue to subscribe to unsupported newsgroups, you
may experience poor computer performance and slow throughput speeds.
Failure to unsubscribe may also interfere with the functioning of the
Verizon network or use of the network by other Verizon users, which is a
violation of our Acceptable Use Policy.
We appreciate your business and look forward to continuing to serve you
in the future.
Sincerely,
Verizon Online

While my ISP provides newsgroups and alt.guitar.beginner
I only receive about 1 post in 10-20 posts for some
reason. So I have to cut and paste out of google groups
to be part of a discussion.
I wonder if a dedicated news server would provide any
better coverage. Is it a case that posts from within
google groups are not relayed to the outside world ?
Paul P
"Google groups" is just a term that google
uses. It's still a usenet newsgroup. Google
simply builds it's own web based, and poorly
implemented, interface.
www.individual.net
From the university of Berlin.
Costs $13 per year. Very reliable,
well worth the dollar a month or so
fee that they charge.
Lumpy
You were the Tidy Bowl Guy?
Yes. I'm cleaning your bathroom bowl.
www.LumpyVoice.com
I signed up for Supernews; you can get a pretty cheap deal that works if
you're not participating in binary groups. The only thing I've noticed
is that headers refresh much more slowly than they did when I used
Verizon.
My son has used "Giga news" for the last year since he moved out and DL's
tons of stuff and never has had a problem.
MB
Disclaimer I don't work for Gig news nor does my son.
I would always recommend a dedicated news server
like Giganews or individual.net or similar,
over google groups.
I'm using a nearly free service, but it ain't that great. But to be fair,
you only sign up with an initial small fee and it is free after that: so
I can't complain about the service. There's always google's groups if I
get desperate when the free service goes haywire.
> While my ISP provides newsgroups and alt.guitar.beginner
> I only receive about 1 post in 10-20 posts for some

That's because of flaky service at their end. If they
run out of file space, get disconnections etc. then
articles get whacked/dropped. In a past life, I used
to run a news server, and recall some of the challenges.
> I wonder if a dedicated news server would provide any
> better coverage.
Definitely. If their primary business model is around
usenet, you can be sure that it isn't being maintained
because "they have to". If their bread and butter is
based upon usenet service, they'll at least be trying
harder (exception being some of the free/semi-free
services).
> Is it a case that posts from within
> google groups are not relayed to the outside world ?
As Lumpy has already pointed out, they are just another
"alternative" to the news server list of choices. They
will use the same protocols behind the scenes that
everyone else does to post and receive articles.
That is all wishful thinking.
Gas prices are painfully high while the oil corporations are making
record profits.
There is no good news in any of this.
