My 2nd guitarist in my hobby band has been struggling for a year with crap tone.
He has a Mini Marshall of some sort. Then he got a big boy Vox head 60 watts or so - power tubes but digital front end with modeling etc etc. He could never get a good tone. He decide he wanted a new "practice amp" - I convinced him to go ALL tube - focus on a good clean sound ( we can always add dirt with pedals if needed), also a real spring reverb if possible.. WE came up with a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe - 40 watts all tube ( 2 x 6L6's & ax7's ) big spring reverb & 1x10" cab..combo . He could not be happier ! and now he can sell all that junk.. Ed

Be careful when using an extension speaker with a Fender amp.
You can only use the amps speaker OR the extension cabinet.
If you use both together you risk burning out the output transformer and possibly more.
Be sure that the extension cabinet has the same ohmage as the amps speaker.

I think a decent tube amp and some pedals is the way to go. I've tried
digital muliFx and modellers of various kinds and never been happy with
them.

I think you meant "1x12" combo.
Yeah - the Fender Hot Rod Deluxe and the Peavey Classic 30 are standard
working/gigging amps. They can take a lickin and they keep working.

Anyways - the clean channels on these amps make nice cleans and always
are good with taking pedals right into the front end input.
The drive channels suck on both of these - but who care - with a nice clean
foundation tone to work with on both of these - that's all you need.
Kick on a pedal or two or three and away you go... back off and you have
a nice clean. easy.

Glad to hear he got something he can actually enjoy playing through.
The only grip I have with the HRD and Classic 30 are the OEM speakers
they come with. Eventually a speaker change usually gets done on these.
The Eminence 'Red, White and Blues' speaker is a great replacement for
the crappy stock speaker in the Fender HRD. It keeps the same vibe as the
OEM speaker but smooths it out and stays much tighter and articulate when
you use any overdrive or distortion. The OEM speaker is good for cleans only (imho)

And just a suggestion - he might want to get a nice portable/foldable
amp stand for live gigs. Gets the combo off the floor and obviously
gets the sound up and out and lets him hear himself better too for stage volume

Some spare power tubes and a couple spare preamp tubes and he's all set.

Yeah, last night we were checking it out with my JMP 2204 Mk2 jamming along with him. I gave him one of my tilt stands. I can say I still like my JMP w 4x12 better but it's very nice for something you can carry with one hand, and has that Superb 6L6 Fender clean chime - with spring reverb. Also it lit up real nice when I hooked up my pedal board.. OCD drive & Tube screamer, Roland space echo, BF-3 Flanger unleashed the beast.. ed

I don't have personal experience of this, but I have heard from a few monster players on the jazz guitar group that an Axe FX2 or a Kemper will replicate the experience of playing through a tube amp down to the most subtle nuance. You have to lay out some bug bucks, though.

Hey - that's not really a bad thing at all - it's always good in a multi-guitar
band that everyone has different rigs and tones/sounds - one fills in the other
and vice versa - makes for a good 'mix'. The HRDlx he has also has a speaker
out so he can hook up an extension cab and then have a big sounding 2x12 rig.
One hand grabs the combo and the other grabs the extension cab. Easy in and out
for the gigs. Fender makes a matching 1x12 extension for the Hot Rod Deluxe
but obviously he could get whatever he wants. The HRDlx sits on top of the
matching cab so he can have his own mini-stack. No amp stand needed! heh.

Yeah - give him time to get it all dialed in. I'm willing to bet once he gets it all
dialed in and gets used to the amp - he'll be all set with a lifetime keeper.
Now it's onto a pedal board for him. Looks like you got that started already!!

Good luck with your band - it's always good to hear that a player got his gear
issues straightened out and you'll have another good sound coming into your
band mix. It's also good to hear that you are still rockin it and helping others
rock out and get going towards good sounds and gear to help make the band sound good!
If I didn't have mentors like yourself along the way I would be lost and
your bandmate would have probably been forever lost too.

We have some outdoor gigs coming up and they are my favorite because you can
really crank it up outdoors and let those tubes cook and the speakers move a lot
of air. Personally - I get tired of indoor smaller gigs because you really can't
feel the music as much as outdoors when I can actually feel the speakers moving
air. I stand in front of the bass player's rig (pair of 4x10's stacked)
and 8 speakers pumping out I can feel it and he looks back and smiles and laughs.
We all have a great time! Hope you and your band have a great summer season!

Hmmm... I have a pair of 2x12 cabs I stack to make a half-stack and I think it's
time to bring out the Mesa/Boogie Mark III head to get things going for outdoors.
The only time the Boogie sounds good is when you can get it cranked up LOUD.

It's freakin 90+ degrees here but I don't care! I love outdoor events!
take care!

We'll be doing my annual Fun In The Sun gig at my house in late July ( friend only!! what could be better ! ) . 20x40 in-ground pool, BBQ , Beer, Live outdoor music, lawn games - kids and adults.. its a great time. When you get to hot to play we take a break and have a drink and go swimming for a while Sometime if there are strong fellas around ( all the junk is in the basement uGGG ) - I get the Marshall 4x12 with a 2x12 on top for the JMP ( 3/4 stack haha)& the HiWatt 400 w 2x15's cranking for my rig ( stereo guitar or bass and Moog Tarus ) - now that will get your pants flappin... : ' ).. Take care & enjoy , as I know you do! - ed
