Child labor?
I had a look at harmony central & here is what they say about that
guitar:

You have to read some of these reviews, they rate this guitar very
poorly...the ones that rate it high are so bloody sarcastc...
really worth reading for a laugh :)

"imaginary guitar notes & imaginary vocals exists only in the
imagination of the imaginer...and ultimately who gives a fuck
anyway..."
<g> I like that, especially the two 10s.
Writing of cheapos, these were on sale in the US for about $50:

The reviews weren't that bad:
http://reviews.harmony-central.com/reviews/Acoustic+Guitar/product/Gretsch/Americana+Series/10/1
I tried a few in the local store, and thought they would be very good for
lap steel, and not that bad for conventional playing with little work. I've
read stories about bridges coming off though.
Tony D
Hmm... about the bridges coming off, the Americana evidently has a 24"
scale, with a pinless bridge, and ships with light strings. In order
to get more volume, more than one of those reviewers replaced the
light strings with mediums, and one of them mentioned that when he
replaces strings again, he will be going heavier still. I think that
it would probably be a good idea for that fellow to drill and ream the
bridge for bridge pins.
Very good point that I hadn't noticed. It is true that they sound thin and
"stringy" with the original strings. and I thought of heavier strings as a
matter of course.
Tony D
It's even more impressive when you think that the US$ is worth next to
nothing nowadays. ;)

No black hat is included, though.

After the modding and a possible "crack 'n sproing event" later with the
heavier strings, you may end up back to the normal price, or worse..
The "lowest cost is the law" might work for Zellers or Wallmart, but it
seems rather unwise when it comes to musical instruments. Surely there is
a ton of choice above the bottom of the trough without breaking the bank.
Snark.
Sure is, but I mentioned these Gretsches because I thought they has a very
good sound, in a specific way, regardless of price. Not a clunker by any
means.
Tony D
The obvious questions are: Is it any good? By what standards? What
have you got to compare it against? What makes the difference between
cheap and nasty, and cheap and cheerful? I'd expect a bare minimum of
stable tuning, decent tuners, and a buzz-free fretboard factory setup
at any price-any less is just going to be frustration. Any more falls
into the categories of Live Without It. Tweak It. or Upgrade.
I've got one of these:
http://www.gear4music.com/Guitar-and-Bass/Round-Back-Acoustic-Guitar-by-Gear4music/5XM
for pub environments (liquids in open containers, people with
compromised judgement and coordination), and I play the better
sounding Eko Ranger at home.
I've seen these marked down to £49.97 on the shelves at Tesco. Should
I, shouldn't I........
That looks kind of like an Ovation. Glen Cambel used to play one of
those. Right now my Burswood is in limbo, because I need to get some
fret wire. I replaced the fingerboard, and installed some steel frets
which were okay for awhile, but steel frets are more difficult to
level than the standard copper alloy ones. In the meantime, though,
I'm just waiting for my next mowing season, and tinkering around on my
keyboard.
U should have bought something decent in the first place, then you'd
be playin.
Ya know if you take into acouint the time you play an instrument
( assuming you actually do, and enjoy it). The original purchase price
drops to pennies per hr in the long run. Get a good guitar as soon as
you can and don't waste your time with crap. 2c ed s.
Ed, the fingerboard replacement was a modification, and not a repair.

I completely agree. I paid about $3000 for my current acoustic about 10
years ago. I reckon an average of about 50 hours of pleasure per month.
So it's cost me around 50 cents a day to enjoy this fine instrument, and
that price of course gets lower as time goes on.
I've probably put about $250 worth of maintenance into it, so I guess
that adds a couple of bucks a month.
Hell, I used to spend almost ten bucks a day on smoking, and I don't
even want to think about what I spent on single malt scotch per month
before scotch and me broke up. The guitar is a bargain!
Should have bought what you wanted in the first place. ( pretty
drastic mod, by the way I hope the figerboard isn't wider than the
neck..., perhaps it's ebony and mother of pearly inlays ?? should look
great )- ed
When I bought my Burswood, what I wanted was my first full-sized
dreadnought, and that's what I got. After I had played it for awhile,
what I wanted was a fingerboard which was wider than anything which
was available on a steel string guitar, and now I have that too.
How wide is the fingerboard?
FWIW, as simple and not-too-expensive fix for anyone wanting a wide neck is
a 12-string with six-string nut fitted.
Tony D
So did you add wood putty to fill the difference between a normal neck
and the now super wide fretboard. Must look stunning ( post a
pic!) .. ROTFLMAO -
Ya know when I bought my first guitar ( a MIA Strat ), and started to
play I though Ohh my, the necks is to thin I can play that chord
without my fingers hitting the unwanted string ( prehaps I bought the
wrong guitar ? )- Then I learned to play it..........no problem...e
I forgot to insert a link- it was this Strat copy package on the
shelves

Should I, shouldn't I........
I did. I got the last shop soiled display model for £30 this morning,
tweaked it a bit this afternoon, and I'll be playing it at the Open
Mic tonight.
