I finished the cabinet I was working on the last time I posted pictures.

I was hoping some of you would comment on the cabinet. I'm looking for
criticism so don't be afraid to be blunt. Comment on anything. I won't be
offended.

THANKS

27 lbs loaded with a Celestion Vintage 30. The speaker is 10.5 lbs so the
cabinet is 16.5 lbs.

I'll work on mp3's.

I had to give up because of all the damn popups. What I saw looks nice
but yeah, truth is in the sound...not the look. The look is secondary.

looks very nice.
one criticism (I gotta point this out or my old mate Tommy will never
forgive me, rest his soul)

The dovetails are orientated the wrong way round.
They need to be orientated so they grip tighter when the item is held by the
handle.

In reality, they are probably ok but if you do a lot of moving with it the
over time the dovetails may become loose.

very tidy job though, well done.

I've heard that about the popups. I have a popup blocker so I don't see
them. I'll look for another album. I have a website but I haven't published
anything yet I'm still working on it.

I've played with it a little and it sounds fine. Just as good as any other
cabinet I've made. But of course beauty is in the ear of the beholder.

Thanks

These are so over-the-top when it comes to strength it really doesn't
matter. You can literally use these for blocking up your car. I like the
aesthetics of having the pins on top. If someone wants them the other way
I'd be glad to make them.

Thanks for the comment.

I know - its just it reminded me of something I made years ago, I did
exactly the same with the dovetails
and my old mate Tommy went to great lengths to point out the "error" so it
only seemed right to pass on his wisdom :-)

Ironically, the item I made (a tool box) lasted longer than poor old Tommy
did.

A question - would you not have considered using 2 x 10" cones instead of 1
x 12" ?
I'm no speaker expert so I maybe way out (maybe someone could explain the
pros and cons)

The dovetails I make (both the half and the full) are made using a router
and a template resulting in very tight joints. I'm guessing the dovetails on
your tool box were cut by hand. The way it was describe to me was you can
make one dovetail joint by hand in the time it takes to set up a dovetail
jig. After that you can make 20 in a jig in the time it takes to make one by
hand. The dovetails cut with a template are quite impressive and, with a
little instruction, can be done by a novice woodworker.

Here is the link I posted earlier when I was making the cabinet (sorry in
advance for the popups):

The half dovetails were cut using a jig with a template and a router. The
full dovetails were cut using a template that attaches directly to the
boards and a router. Here is the link to Mr. Keller's site:

I'm not a speaker expert either but the answer to the first question is yes.
I'll probably make a 2x10 cab soon but my next project is getting my website
up then matching amp heads cabs for two of the speaker cabinets I've already
made.

Yes, mine where done by hand. I know that using a router is (once set up)
far quicker and more accurate.
Having said that, I had 20 (ish) years on construction and those routers
still scare the hell out of me. I hate them!

The cabs you make though do really look good. Though the first picture I
looked at the name plate was slightly obscure
and I was looking at the smaller pic - I though for a second it was called a
"satan can" which I though was an awesome name for a guitar cab. It was only
when I saw the full size image I realised it said "safari cab" oh well :-)

Good luck, I'd love to see how it all progresses.
as others said, the proof is in the sound but if they sound as good as they
look then they will be great.

They scare me too but table saws are more dangerous.

true, a guy I worked with had an incident with one of those - they call him
stumpy now!
(it was his own fault mind you - this is what happens if you don't use a
decent push stick)
