Okay Rant time!

I've been shopping around at lots of stores and I had my worst ever customer
service experience at a music store here in Toronto... Won't name it, but
lets say it starts with "S" and ends in "teve's Music."

The first time I went to the store, I worked with this guy and he was really
helpful, but I din't have much time so I said I'd come back later.

So the next day I come in at lunch time, and the guy from the first day is
nowhere to be seen. I'm just there to try a few things out, so I ask another
salesman to point me in the right direction. I stayed for about 45 minutes
and I think I talked to him twice.

Then a few days later I went back to ask some more questions. Both of the
guys were there, and they seemed to have a bit of a disagreement over who
got my commission. When I was going to leave I asked a few questions about
putting things on hold and what not. And then just before I went, the guy
says "Just so you know, you should really stick with one salesman, you know?
Because we work on commission and you should keep that in mind when you're
shopping." He was so smarmy when he said it!

I was like *WHHAAAAAT! I'm sorry, I don't mean to waste your time by looking
around here without buying anything from you. And it's not *my* fault that
the first guy was away on lunch, you know. I couldn't care less that you had
to hand me a patch cord and plug an amp in for me without earning anythign.

GRRRRR.

So I called and talked to the manager. I hope the guy got shit for that. It
was seriously bad form. I *know* they work on commission, but well, you
should still be helpful to every customer. I'm not going to go back there to
get my amp, just 'cause they're such jerks. I'm taking my money elsewhere!

And well, I still have to buy my guitar there (noone else stocks them) but
that's it. I'm done with that place for good.

Anyone know any stores in Toronto where salesman are helpful, even if they
think you're not buying anything? [sigh] I still need to find somewhere that
has a Marshall G15RCD practice amp... :-(

I had a funny experience about 16 years ago when I was in college. I was a
scraggly long-haired 19 year old with torn jeans and a t-shirt with holes in
it. I went to a Nissan dealer looking that way (actually, I had finished
work and I worked with those clothes as it was a night floor cleaner job).
I was serious about buying a brand new pickup truck.

The one salesman there was really snobby and had a major attitude problem
towards me because I came in and wanted to test drive a new pickup. He did
not think I was serious about buying it because of the way I looked so he
would not let me test drive one. So I went to another salesman who "did"
let me test drive one. I took it for a spin around the dealership, came
back in and said "I'll take it". The first salesman was so incredibly
pissed off when he saw what was going on. He kept glaring at me across
the showroom because the other salesman (the nice one) let me drive one and
thus got my commission. If looks could kill, I would have been dead. But
hey, sometimes people get what they deserve and that salesman deserved what
he got because he treated me like a piece of crap. I could not help the
way I looked.

I also remember having to wait over a half hour 6 years ago while a cop
searched my whole car inside and out because he had "suspicion" JUST BECAUSE
I had long hair and a beat up looking car. I was not doing anything wrong
and he pulled me over and expected to find drugs or something in my car.
I was smirking the whole time and told the cop he was wasting his time (in
which he angrily told me to shut the ---- up) because I knew he was only
making a fool of himself while some short-haired nice-dressed person was
probobly driving by us in an expensive car with a pound of herion under his
front seat :-)

Heh, that's when you call the manager over in front of both of these
guys, and announce you were about to drop five thousand dollars on
some merchandise but decided to go elsewhere because of his remark :)

Exactly, the power of your dollar speaks loudly.

Might give the Vox Pathfinder practice amp a try also. Bought one of
these and love this little guy!

Trevor,

Just mail order it. That amp is readily available. Find the cheapest price to
your door. I wouldn't go back to that store if I could avoid it.

tbk,
Your lucky the Cop didn't decide to plant something in your car just to
make a fool out of you.
It hasn't ever happened to me, but I could sure see a cop planting
something just to help his bust record.

I've been shopping at Steve's in Ottawa and have had no problems
whatsoever. As a matter of fact, when I brought in my two-week-old
amp to have it looked at (one of the controls was cutting in and
out badly), he replaced the amp outright without even making me
wait while checking it. I guess I have a trustworthy face :)

I guess he would have doublechecked if the amp was more expensive
than $200, but I was very pleased with the service, and I'll
recommend them to anyone.

Absolutely, anyone who would put their lives on the line every day to
keep your city safe sucks. Sounds like you got caught doing something
wrong. I hope one of those bastards doesnt have to save your life
someday. Get a life.

I don't know what you see, but life on the line around here? Not likely.
They'd rather make traffic stops, and issue DWI's, speeding tickets, and
arrest anyone they can to better their records.
They put their life on the line when they *fabicate* criminals through
"sting" operations by sending minors to stores to buy alcohol or cigarettes
and hope the person serves them to get a bust. Think about a "sting" for a
minute, no one is a criminal until the cops make them one.

Uh huh....good solid thinking Bry. If they suspect someone of selling
to underage users should they post a cop outside of those liquor
stores waiting for someone underage to come in?

"No one is a criminal until the cops make them one?" Is that what you
really meant to say? All criminals are the results of stings? Sorry
but when you make outlandish statements like that it sure doesnt add
to your credibility.

I for one want that guys license, I dont want him selling liquor and
cigarettes to my kids.

I think he was thinking in terms of a cop sending an underager to attempt
it, then busting them when they came out. I have never heard of this mind
you, but i think that that is more a morality test than a criminal one.

We must have been pulled over a 100 times when going home from gigs. In
plod's mind, anyone associated with bands/music has to be a dope-head, and
therefore, guilty until proved otherwise. Having had first hand experience
of being 'fitted up' I would not cross the street to piss on one if I saw
him on fire! P.
