Hi all!
In case you're not familiar with the ArtistWorks Guitar Project, this
was a 4 or 5 day collaboration with Jimmy Bruno and Andreas Oberg here
in Napa CA at ArtistWorks HQ. Both guitarists teach online using our
video exchange technology where they receive videos of their students
from all over the world and then they respond with a video of critique
or comment. In this Episode, Jimmy and Andreas work through some
"Move" s... Here they are figuring out articulations and harmonies in
order to play well together. This is still from Day 1 (many more
hours to go!), Jimmy had just gotten in the chair a few hours before.
They talk about each other's technique and "time feel" and how they
listen to each other and hear each other. This is the edited down
version for YouTube, the unedited is on their sites for the students.

Once was questionable.
Twice is spam.

Jimmy Bruno was busted once previously in the jazz
group for one of his employees posing as a satisfied
customer and raving about how much he learned from
the video.

Jimmy, you're a good guitarist. Your material is
something that a lot of people like.

So sell your stuff on it's merit, not on this
spamming that you've started doing, again.

Yabbut, I tend to believe the explanation there, that Jimmy was pretty
embarrassed by that independent action of an overzealous underling. I
was participating, sort of, in the jazz ng when that scene went down.
And hey, if folks think we have flame wars in this ng, you should
experience some of the deadly shit that goes down over in jazz land!
After all the ins and outs and ups and downs of the flame war over the
fake raving, it really seemed in the end that Jimmy was the victim of
getting young guys who are "internet savvy" to run that side of things
for him.

Is it Jimmy, or is it the folks working for him? Yah, yah, the captain
is responsible no matter what.

It is definitely not Jimmy. He has a bunch of investors behind him,
and they have hired people to make sure this project is successful.

Jimmy is the name, and of course drives the content of the institute.

Right-o, Derek. Jimmy is a straight-up guy who doesn't need gimmicks
to sell his music/services. In fact, IIRC, he got into the Guitar
Institute thing was because he had carpal tunnel problems that
threatened to sideline him as a performer. He had too much knowledge
not to share it, so the Institute was a natural outgrowth. The fact
that he had to work with others to make this happen and gave up a
certain amount of control to do it, is part of the game.

This vid isn't the most flattering for Jimmy. It was a nice behind-the-
scenes glance for the rest of us of how two artists who differed in
age, background, and music could get along... or not.

As for Jimmy being a "good guitarist", well, he may be a touch better
than "good" since he's earned a successful career based on his
abilities.

The crappy players like me stay at the bottom always looking up; the
good players are out there gigging, but most don't make a healthy
living from it; the really good players make a living out of it and
the exceptional ones become world-reknowned.

Like any other ability-based endeavor, there are strata of musical
abilities and achievements even in really good players and only a
handful rise to the top of that.

I wasn't using it quite so broad or esoteric like.
I think it's difficult to say that someone has
"mastered" a single or multiple genres. There's no
measurement. Guitar playing isn't a demonstratable
collection of skills ie "do you know how to play
the enchiladian mode scale? if not you're only
in the 'almost good' category". It's kind of like
saying Bob is a good singer. He's "mastered" a genre
or maybe more than one genre.

Some people might like Jimmy or Rit, others might not.
My use of the term "good" in this case, probably means,
"you can play the guitar well enough to not have to spam".

I bought his DVD. Seems like another collection of chord scales and
a speed picking demonstration to me. Bunches of musicians have
published books and videos like that. Some by musicians that I've
always liked.

As to whether or not Jimmy knows about this spam, or knew
about the spam that he got busted for in the jazz group,
nobody here knows. It's all a guess. I personally think
he knew all about the spammer on the jazz group. But that
too is just a guess.
