I have had a few different noise reducers through the years including
a Rocktron Hush that I used for my noisy bass but it was a rack mount
and that was 20 years ago.
My most recent Telecaster is not noisy at normal volumes but I am
gigging through a 15 watt tube amp and at times at full volume.
With the guitar and amp at full volume it is very noisy.
Single coil pickups are noisy.
That is the main reason that Humbucking pickups were invented.
I don't like the sound of humbuckers so I stick with single coils.
My Telecaster is the best sounding guitar I have and I don't want to
change the sound.
I liked my old Hush so I decided to try the Rocktron Hush pedal.
(Picked it up from ebay at a reasonable price).
A couple weeks ago at a gig I was told by the drummer that my amp is
putting out a loud hum.

First I plugged my guitar straight into the amp and turned the volumes
up.
It was very noisy.
Then I plugged the guitar and amp into the Hush pedal and the noise
was less with the control on the pedal at its lowest setting.
Turned the knob to 5 and the noise was gone.
Turning the knob higher altered my sound and volume.
The Rocktron Hush has been around for decades for a reason.
It works.

Have you ever tried the long out-of-production rack mount Guitar
Silencer? It gives you lots of control over the entire process. But
it's not as convenient as your pedal, so mine now collects dust (sold
most of my rack gear, including the tube rack power amp).

I use a volume pedal - when you playing you can't hear the hiss over the notes , when you're not playing volume off. e

I used to have rack gear for my bass including a CS 800 power amp that
weighed a ton.

Well, think of the rackmount Guitar Silencer as a more sophisticated
circuit giving you FAR more control over the nature of the noise
reduction and operation of the gate. But, in the real world, if it's
too much of a hassle to use...

I may have to try out one of the new pedals. I would NOT expect the
same results. But if it's "good enough," it would see actual use.

Pinky on the volume knob works almost as well as a volume pedal. I
have an old Maestro Boomerang that I used to use when I actively
played in bands ("way back when..."). It's a wah, but kick the switch
by pressing your toe and it becomes a variable volume boost. It's not
just a volume pedal, because full toe is quite a bit louder than
having the pedal out of the signal chain.

Somebody really ought to reissue that wah. It's the "Theme from
Shaft" wah.
