Just sharing some fun here - don't bother telling me the timing drifts
and stuff - I know. I did not have any appropriate click track so I
was using one that didn't fit quit right and it was messing with my
head. Anyways just having some fun with the New LesPaul Deluxe, and
24 track porta studio, while the bands on vacation. Ed S.

Sounds pretty good. Sounds like a guitar synth. Is it?

I don't play in bands anymore, but record stuff like you, only on a
digital 8 track, not a 24-track recorder.

Here's my stuff: http://members.cox.net/oasysco/gregsong.htm I dabble
in guitar synth as you'll see when the page loads.

No synth. LesPaul and my pedal board in Marshall JMP,w shure 58
mic's .
24 track is new ( only used 4 on this one) , previous was an 8 (2
live).
Gona work this into an intor for a tune with the band & re-do ( just
use 16 bars or so as a basic theme )

Man Greg - you have lots of good stuff on your site - thanks for
sharing. Ed

100 hits and 1 comment - what are you people doing?? unless all 99
decided the timing was so off why bother, or it sucks so bad or
whatever .. I mean really people put some stuff out there, and share
some ideas - it doesn't need to be perfect to share it. ( or maybe
everyones so uptight, there just afraid to share & if its not perfect
there afraid to comment ). ed

No, no... that people don't feel qualified to provide feedback as you
stated in your last sentence.

Oh and one more thing... no matter what people's opinions are - good,
bad or indifferent, they shoudl in no way influuence you and your
music. That is, I make the best music I am capable of at the time, but
it is never good enough for me. If someone says I really like this or
that, it doesn't make me play better. If someone says they don't like
it because of this or that reason it still doesn't make me play better
because I am limited to my ability at the time. I miht concentrate on
the bad stuff they said to fix, but if, for example someone says to me
that my timing is messed up, Il'l probably not be able to fix it any
faster. Know what I mean?

Sorry, but when the post pointing to it said "the timing drifts and
stuff" and seemed to be one of those "I didn't bother to make it good,
but listen anyway" things, well, I couldn't be bothered to listen. Why
should anyone bother to listen to something that you haven't tried your
best at? That's the honest scoop, man.

Because it doesn't have to be PERFECT to share it! It not my best and
prob never will be.. . it's just having some fun getting there ( the
journey not the destination -- get it... )- and yet 100 people took
the time to look at it.........Thats my point............... this is a
beginner site , and I still consider myself a beginner ( at it a few 5
years or so as a hobbie). I showing the guys that it doesn't need to
be perfect to throw it up. And at the same time I want it know its a
quicky so the Big Shots don't get all worked up, saying you missed a
note or the time is a little off here and there, or what key is that
in etc. etc. .

How about the fact that you ask people not to tell you what's wrong with
it but you complain that no one commented?

Ok, I listened. Sorry, it didn't do anything for me. Too noisy.
Musically it seemed a collection of clichs. But mostly too noisy. If
there is an emotional build up, all that of that highly effected noise
might make sense, but in this case it just sounded like those guys
showing off some rock clichs at the music store.

In other words, no comment. :)

Ok. So overlook the poor timing. Overlook the overuse
of cliche's. Overlook the lack of emotional build up.
Overlook the "too noisy".

Other than that?

I like it. But here's the thing.
It sounds like you are playing through a Roland Jet Phase
(or you are cascading a fuzz into a phaser... same thing really)
anyways, you could just as well be playing a Strat.
That fuzz/phaser sound really takes over the guitar so that
using these effects you could be playing any guitar and it would
generally sound the same (yeah I know.. my friend and I use fuzz->phaser
and he uses Gibson SG and I play my Strat and you would hardly know
the difference).
Anyways, maybe try to hilight the Les Paul as what it can sound or
do differently than a Strat rather than applying effects that mask
the actual sound of the LP. (hopefully this is making sense, I am
not great at textual explanations).
or if you want to showcase the LP then let it shine with less effects.
I dunno.. I play Strats and Teles and many of my friends play LP's or SG's
and in a band setting it works great since each of us sit in a different
tonal/sound region and it all fits into the mix since we let each of our
guitars 'do its thing and let them do what they do best.. etc.."
Don't worry about the timing thing. I know you play good live and
with a drummer you'd fall into timing no problem.

Anyways, I like the noodling around but that overwhelming Jet Phaser
type of sound/sustain you could be playing any guitar to get that.

That's certainly a really nice LP you have though!
You know something - I can never really get used to playing a Gibson SG or LP.
I have tried so many times and I just keep coming back to Fender teles and strats.
Maybe one day I'll get another one and give it a try again.
The necks are completely different (feel) and I miss the single coil neck position.
thanks for sharing your stuff!

ps. I am not dissing you - I respect anyone that posts their stuff up
and shares it. I post stuff up too on occasion and some people like it
and some don't. But at least we're putting stuff up. Kudos to you ed.

No prob thanks - you always have wise things to say, and well worth
listening to. Ya know most the time I just play the LP "clean" ( well
I back the pre amp on the amp down fro 6 for the Strat to 3 for the
gibby and its still kinda dirty). But I usually don't add and dirt
pedals on it - but this time I did just for the hell of it. And a lot
of the phaser stuff was was after the fact on the recorder as I'm
messing with a new toy and exploring it ( Tascam 2488 neo). So point
well taken to much stuff.. I know what you mean about LPs , I never
could get use to or want to get use to one - they just felt so FAT -
but the 60's profile neck on these particular models is pretty close
to a Strat feel, and it also has push pulls on the tone controls to
make it single coil or bucker - so there you go a single coil neck
pick up it there also. Ed. .

actually that sounds cool to do. hmmm... next time I dabble with a LP
I'll wire up a push-pull and coil tap it (I think most LP's have those
single braided pickups that are 2 leads and can't be coil tapped ??
Kinda like the stock 490R pickup). But I could always put in a 4 wire
and coil tap it. That's great advice there because if I could get
a decent single coil type sound from the neck of LP then it might be cool to try.
I always found the neck pup on the LP (at least the stock 490R) got real
dirty really fast. Kinda boomy - but it does take to grind and overdrive well.

I think sometimes I enjoy listening to others play LP's and SG's rather
than what I sound like on one. I dunno - I think sometimes the actual
guitar you are playing makes you change the way you play.
With my Tele on lower gain single channel Fender amps I tend to stay
busy on the fretboard (because the notes can tail off quickly).
But when I played the Les Paul there was so much
sustain that I started to hang on notes longer and let them sustain out.
More 'legatto' sort of...

Ah well. thanks again for posting the clip
and you gotta resist the temptation to over-produce the recording.
I think you sound great live - if you can capture that in a recording
you're all set (imho). Hey - some people only sound good with post-recording
production/effects/ etc.. but you sound really good live. capture
some of that in your recordings.
(easier said than done... I know.)

Maybe just live mic up your cab and go from there (instead of direct to board).
I think I sound best recorded just live mic'd up and some post compression added.
But that's just me. It keeps the 'raw' sound of it better (to me anyways).
The cool thing is that even a cranked up low wattage amp 1x12 rig can sound
huge when mic'd and recorded.

Hey - I'm still a beginner well younger than most here so I'm still
learning a lot as I go along. I am really dialed in when it comes
to sitting in the mix right with the bands I am in.
And yet if I sound that way playing practice at home, most people would
say it doesn't sound right. But take that sound into band and it's perfect.
I am learning there sometimes a big difference between what solo bedroom players
think sounds good and what actually sits right in a band mix when at full
band volume.
I'm using greenbacks (25 watt celestions) now and they don't exactly sound
great at home or bedroom volumes. But that same sorta raspy gritty mids
and upper mids/treble and bottom breakup fits perfect in full band cranked up
for rhythm work (and I can flip down to bridge pickup for occasional leads/riffage)

ok. sorry to bore you. Just typing too much again.
Have a great New year! rock on ed!

It would seem to me that even less "effect noise" is desired in the band
situation. It tends to turn everything into mud.

Very true. Let the guitar and amp do the work.

That was recorder with a shure m58 in front of a 4x12 geerback TLV
Marshall cab. with JMP MKII 50w at about 2-3 pre, 6 master. and then I
went overboard - 808 screamer into Metal Muff with top boost ( this
is the nasty that needs to be avoided more (imo). the H2o visual sound
chorus ( at the lowestest setting for chorus - I gotta break that
habit I use it to much, but love it.... ) Then some delay..... then
into board were I messed with it more after recording...
I'm thinking Im goin to run a straight guitar signal from my
strobostomp ( 1st in chain) as an additional channel to the recorder
board, then I will have a really clean channel to play with later (and
can send it anyywhere) in addition to my mic'd amp's signal.. But
I can't play super clean without messing up my mojo as Im
playing... anyway things to learn - later... ed
