Looking for suggestions for a combo amp

his gear some ten years back. I know he wants to start playing again
but has had a bit of a bad luck streak so I want to buy him an amp for
his birthday (I've already tracked down a decent bass guitar that I'll
be buying from my brother).
What I'm looking for:
Price: I'd like to keep it at less than $150.
Power: He has an opportunity to possibly hook up with a band, so I'm
thinking a minimum of 100 watts and that's probably still going to be
a bit weak for bass in a rock band.
Type: I'm thinking a combo would provide the best bang for the buck
and also fit into his apartment.
Obviously, I'm going to be looking at used gear. I searched this
group through Google and saw some earlier suggestions that looked good
but most were for either beginners or the gear was beyond my price
range. Some of those suggestions were:
Gallien-Krueger Backline 115
SWR Workingman
Ampeg B-100
Carvin Pro Bass (100/150/200)
I'd appreciate any comments on the above or other suggestions that
would fit the bill.

There ought to be a Peavey on your short list from my experience.
Also, I'm transitioning OUT of an SWR Workingman's 12 simply because
its NOT loud enough to keep up with a drummer.

Thanks! We've been friends for over 20 years, played in some bands
together when we were younger and I know he'd do the same thing for me
if the situation were reversed. He's really had a bad run of luck
over the past few years and needs something in his life that will pick
up his spirits as well as give him something to do since so I figured
this would be good for him.

My SWR Redhead (240W, 2x10) keeps up just fine with a drummer and
two guitarists... but we're playing classic rock not death metal,
and we don't like the bartender/manager telling us to turn down
5 times per set.

The SWR Redhead is *very* sweet and it was my favorite amp to plug
bass guitars into for customers to demo them when I worked in a music
store years ago. Unfortunately, it's totally out of my price range.
If money were no object, it'd be up at the top of my list for it's
combination of sound quality, power and portability. Thanks though!

Shouldn't it be "UnemployedMan" since if a musician had a job, he could
afford the "real" version.

I think they've just realised that, the WorkingMan's series has become
the WorkingPro series. The budget range is called LA - which probably
means it spontaneously catches fire causing the nearby population to be
evacuated (I do hope all you people in the fire zone are safe, we're
seeing some scary satelliite images on the TV news)

I have a Roland DB500 for upright gigs (1x12" + tweeter, 160w combo,
easily as good as a GK 150E) but it's a loud little bugger and would
eat what your friend requires with ease. I think they may be
discontinued now but they often come up on ebay in your price bracket,
despite being expensive to buy new. I paid less than £100 for mine,
well worth it, the main rig stays at home for most of my gigs since I
got it.

Wow! Are you offering to sell your Redhead for $150 or even less? If
so, consider it SOLD to me. I love my Workingman 12 EXCEPT its not
loud enough to keep up with a drummer in a honky tonk band where the
bar OWNER tells me to turn up the bass. What I did NOT say was that
SWR made no model that would be loud enough. If you want to sell your
Redhead for the price he wants, I'll gladly buy it from you ten times
over.

I had a SWR Silver 350 that was not loud enough through an 8 ohm 4X10.

Still well worth it even for just the head. One of the best compact club

He already has my brother's old bass that I bought for him. The bass
is by company called Vision; my brother believes it was some sort of
other brand by Aria. He'd had it since the mid 80's and it served him
well for a long time. He kept it finely tuned including replacing the
stock pups with Duncan actives even if the instrument wasn't exactly
top-of-the-line to start with. So, now my friend will have an amp.
