I have a Fender Hot Rod P Bass and I notice that the configuration that
I have fallen into is to just use the P pickup and roll the tone all
the way off. You don't get those crispy highs this way but with two
guitars in the band I like this setup because the bass doesn't fight
any of the other frequencies in the band. It also gives a nice bassy
sound. Does anyone else like to play with their tone knob rolled all
the way off? I take it this is somewhat unusual.

Secondly, I kind of like those Fender Mark Hoppus basses, which have
jazz bodies and a precision pickup. But they only come with a volume
knob. What's involved with adding a tone knob? Are they wired in
series or parallel? Where would you order one from? Do they come with
all the wires or do you have to provide those, etc. ?

It is for punk. Most punk bassists like it bright and played with a
pick. But almost all reggae bassists do that so it's not unusual.

Adding a tone knob requires adding a second pot and wiring it in and
sticking a capacitor on it to make it change tone and not volume. It
might also require routng if the cavity isn't big enough. Usually if
you just buy a pot, you have to buy your own wires, but you can buy
pre-assembled wiring harnesses. Having to do all that just to have a
tone knob would probably make me want to buy a bass with a tone knob
instead of modding a Mark Hoppus bass.

Yeah, probably. Thing is, I really don't need another bass, it just
caught my eye. And it doesn't seem like adding a tone knob should be a
major operation.

I read in the paper that today is Mark Hoppus 33rd birthday. Just
figured I'd toss that nugget of info in.

These are stacked pots, so you can simply replace the single volume
control and not change the look of the bass very much. It will also
save you having to rout out a larger electronics cavity.

You can get pots from other places too but it's important to get audio
taper pots (perhaps less so for the tone pot) so you might as well get
them from Stewmac as you know they will work for your bass.

No, they don't supply them with wires or the required capacitor.

There are plenty of circuits on the web though.
