hi there

for about 10 yrs now i've had an SWR basic 350 2u rackmount head (red front)

its started to go wrong! horrible hideous crackling popping kinda noises
which seem to start once its warmed up and not when i initially turn it on.
i daren't risk using it for gigs now and i'm really not in a position to buy
anything else at this time!!!! a bit of a worry!

a friend of mine reckons it could be the pre-amp valve and was pretty
shocked that i'd never had it changed!! oo-er!!! i hope this is the case at
that means a cheap fix!!

anyone know anything about this!???? help!!!!!!!!!!!!

cheers

chj

Give her a new preamp tube...

Then report back.

DO NOT CHANGE THE TUBE ON YOUR OWN!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Even the simple act of opening an SWR amplifier can displace the cabling
and cause an increased and unacceptable amount noise from the amplifier.
I am not quite sure what the problem is, but my only knowledgeable
suggestion is to take your amplifier to Audio Design and Service.
These people are the ONLY factory authorized service people for SWR
amps, speakers, ANYTHING. They are extremely fast and are extremely
familiar with EVERY SWR product ever built. I have had two different
cabinets and one amp(SM 400s) repaired there and the repairs have been
perfect. I have not needed to take any of the repaired items back.
They are located in Los Angeles, CA. Even if you don't live nearby, i
think that they might have a mail in repair thingy as well. Their
address is http://www.audiodesign-service.com/

Given that the poster used the term "valve" instead of "tube" I'd
reckon that L.A. just might be a bit far to mail an amp head.

Is it really true that SWR's are that complex that merely opening it can
cause problems? Design oversight, maybe?

yes, it actually is true. it is not a design oversight at all. the
reason for this is simple. good swr stuff (all of the older products
and some of the higher end current stuff) is made entirely by hand and
before the case is closed a person uses a DMM (digital multimeter) to
test every cable inside and position each individual wire so that there
is a minimal amount of electrical noise.

No, it's not complicated at all unless you are absolutely totally unfamiliar
with this kind of exercise.

You just have to pay attention and be careful.

Wow You make it sound like His amp will Blow up or some thing If he
simpley opened it up and even blew into it... Let alone do about the
simplest thing U can do on a Tube amp...

There is plenty of room in that SWR 350. I had mine open 3 minutes
after i bought it just to find some Nuts Lose.....

Ya i tightend them myself he he...

I must have swapped and tested at least 20 different preamp tubes
in my SWR until I found the right one for me.

No problems.

Easy as Pie.
