Are some of the Tobias bass guitars constructed in Japan? Are those
generally just as good as any?

Not really. Tobias has gone through some changes and after Gibson picked it up
it never was the same again. But the basses to buy would be the basic, classic
models. These at least were made similar to when michael Tobias made them.

The original questions was, "Did Tobias make any basses in Japan?" Answer,
no.

However, they made some in Korea a few years ago, called Toby's. (Tobias
Toby Pro)
I have a 6 string Toby fretless that is better than $4,000 basses I've
played.
You can see a great picture of a 4 string fretted on at Bass Northwest.
Here's what they say,

"This one is the Tobias Toby Pro 4 string model that features a
neck-through design with Quilted Maple wings and a Wenge/Maple neck with a
Rosewood fingerboard. The pickups are the passive "soapbar" type and they
are run through an active 2-band eq. system. The bass plays and sounds
great and is in excellent condition! $599.00
Their site is: www.bassnw.com

Hope this helps,

Actually, someone pointed this link out to me that talks about a factory in
Nagoya, Japan where they made the "Standard" Series. Check it out.

http://www.mtobiasd.com/mtd/history.htm
They also pointed out that these basses were built in Japan, and then
shipped back to the original Tobias crew to be inspected and setup by them.

I have the option to buy one of these "Standard" Series, but I'm getting a
little wary now.

Instruments made in Japan are generally of a good quality; You're even
seeing luthiers popping up over there, which says they're paying their
traditional attention to quality. The big question is what are you
looking for. I was checking out the Basic 5 back in July 98, and was
disappointed. I loved the Basic 4 though!!! I ended up with a Ken
Smith CR-5 that I'm very pleased with. It was more expensive, but it
was worth it.

Have fun
