Saw Buddy Guy last Saturday with Eric Johnson as the opening act. One heck
of a show. I have never seen a band play with that much dynamics.

Eric Johnson was playing in a trio setting with Tommy Taylor on drums and
Chris Maresh on Bass. Chris ran the entire set with an Alembic 5 string bass
into two Fender heads (new 800 watt series) into 2 / 8x10 cabs. Good set
but not the most stimulating band visually. Nobody moved except to step on a
foot pedal. Buddy guy knows how to work a crowd. He had a 5 piece band
backing him ( bass, guitar, drums, keyboards and sax) and they kick ass. I
cant find any info on them and have no idea what their names are( if anyone
knows, let me know).
They could go from a whisper to a scream in a heartbeat.
The bass player was going into two GK 1001 head and 2/ 4-10 cabs. Seemed to
be playing a Fender Jazz Deluxe. Best $27 I've spent and damn sure worth
twice the price.

When my band toured with Buddy Guy a few years ago, his line up included
Orlando Wright on bass (playing a Lakland thru a GK rig)
Tony Z on Hammond, Frank 'Bang' Blinkal on guitar. I can't remember the
drummer or sax players name though.

As for Eric Johnson and Chris Maresh, I saw them in January. The put on a
hell of a show.

On top of Chris great bass laying, he was also using bass pedals ala Geddy
Lee.

That's why Buddy has earned four Grammy's, and won 19 W.C. Handy Blues
Awards! Chicago is fortunate to have him. Unfortunately however, he plays
his home club Legends far too infrequently.

It was the Orpheum.
We've done the Commodore with George Thorogood, and with Little Feat, and I
think with Downchild.
The jazzfest was a cool gig. Aside from getting to be onstage at the
Orpheum, they treated us great, fed us well and gave us each suites at the
Metropolitan Hotel.

We also played both Jubilee Auditoriums in Calgary and Edmonton with Buddy.
Calgary we kicked ass and thought let's see Buddy top that!! (and he did!!)
Edmonton we rawked and Buddy had a very off night. Everytime he tried to
bring it down and talk to the audience, some asshole would shout out " play
Mustang Sally!!!
He was cutting songs short, ending abruptly in the middle of songs, and left
the stage early with no encore.
This was on the day John Lee Hooker passed away, and Buddy flew out to the
funeral during the tour.
The crowd were the stupidest bunch of rednecks I've ever seen.
Buddy never did give in and play Mustang Sally.

Maybe it's the same guy still there from 1975, when Buddy's brother Phil
was in the band (second guitar), and, after the opening number (before
Buddy's entrance), some hose-head near the front jumped out of his seat
and yelled "Welcome to Edmonton, Buddy!"

Phil's very cool, almost frosty (Where's Albert Collins?) reply:

"I ain't Buddy, buddy!"
