Well, things are kind of slow around here, so I thought I just report
my something that came to my attention. I was just photographing my
basses and in editing the photos on my computer I suddenly noticed
something: THE GRAIN ON MY FRETLESS G&L ISN'T STRAIGHT!

Hey, I mean if you pay that kind of money for a bass*, I think the
least you can ask is that the grain should be straight! I mean my two
Chinese made SX basses that I paid little over $100 for, BOTH have
straight grain. And not only that, my photos are crap because the
finish on the G&L is so shiny that all I get is a photo of my big mug
and the camera reflected in the bass. Feh.

What is G&L trying to do anyway? I guess they are trying to take the
award away from Ric for bass maker with the worst attitude! Where is
PD when you need him!

* of course I'm speaking hypothetically here since I actually bought
mine used for a song...

That's why you got it cheap. The grain isn't straight!

You should go dig up that thread and post it for the new guys. That was a
classic.

Funny, I just bought a used 'custom' bass that, after it was finally
delivered to my house, had more things wrong with it than you can
shake a stick at, including a grain pattern in the very beautiful ash
body that does not run parallel to the neck . However, sonically the
thing just absolutely crushes, and the Warmoth neck is close to
perfect. The only way you would discover all the weird things about
it is to take it apart and examine it, which I did before it went out
on a gig. (I always do my personal setup on an instrument before
allowing it out of the house).

From a distance, it is a genuine head turner. I'm keeping it because
I have corrected many of the deficiencies myself, none of them
continue to affect tone or intonation, and I didn't pay long green for
it. If I had received this instrument from a front-line builder, you
can bet it would be going back to the kitchen. The ingredients are
all top-notch, but the assembly totally lacked insight into what makes
a well crafted instrument what it is.

It's like a stripper who looks perfect from the entrance, then
proceeds to get more and more 'human' the closer you get (insert
leering comment here).

As always, buyer beware.

The one that started it all. Woodgrain hilarity starts with post #8:
