A couple o' months ago I was lookin' for a cheap bass in order to help me
work on my rythym chops. I found this Dean Hollywood "Z" bass with all sorts
of real gnarly stickers on it, but otherwise in pretty good condition, at a
local dealer. It really fits in well with my PRS and '68 Tele (haha). I
contacted Dean to get some info on the thing, 'cuz it doesn't have any
writing on it besides the name on the headstock. The guy from Dean that
replied to my email said they had no information on this instrument (which I
found to be rather odd). Does anybody out there know anything about these
basses, such as where and when they were made, and where they sat in the
Dean pecking order? I traded it in (briefly) on a new Aria bass, but quickly
returned it and got the Dean back ('cuz the Aria sucked)

Thanks

Dean was sold some years ago and the factory moved from Chicago to Florida,
so info on old instruments may be hard to come by.

OT, I met Dean Zelinsky once, didn't even realize who he was. I sell
furniture, and one day a salesman stopped by and said "this is Dean
Zelinsky, and he makes these really modern coffee tables." Formica with a
bondo edge, done up to look like real granite. This was 7-8 years ago.
Didn't realize who he was until I recently came across an interview where he
discussed what he did after leaving the guitar business. IIRC he's back in
the guitar business now.

Hollywoods were a low-end line Dean offered in the late 80s shortly
before they went out of business.

Early ones would be US made, some of the later ones might be Japanese
imports.
